Panerai Luminor PAM01710, PAM01711 And PAM01714: The Icon In A New 42mm Format
Few watch designs are as immediately recognisable as the Panerai Luminor. The broad cushion-shaped case, luminous dial, oversized crown-protection bridge and unmistakable proportions have defined the collection for decades. Traditionally, however, that identity has come with substantial dimensions, particularly in the 44 mm and 47 mm formats.
For 2026, Panerai takes the Luminor in a slightly different direction with three new 42mm references: the PAM01710, PAM01711 and PAM01714. Rather than simply shrinking an existing model, these watches draw directly from the earliest Luminor references presented to the public in 1993, while retaining the robust specifications expected from a contemporary Panerai tool watch.
The result is a trio that combines a more compact case with an impressive 500-metre water-resistance rating, automatic winding and three days of power reserve.
Inspired by the beginning of the modern Luminor story
The inspiration behind the three watches goes back to an important moment in Panerai’s history.
In 1993, the Italian brand presented the Luminor Ref. 5218-201/A and Luminor Marina Militare Ref. 5218-202/A, alongside the Mare Nostrum Ref. 5218-301/A. These watches marked the beginning of Panerai’s transition from a specialist supplier of military instruments to a brand available to the wider public.

The new references revisit the visual language of those early Luminor models, particularly in their dial construction and overall utilitarian character.
There are three executions.
The PAM01710 combines a stainless steel case with a black dial, ecru-coloured numerals and a contrasting beige canvas strap. The PAM01711 introduces a green dial and matching green canvas strap, while retaining the stainless steel case. Finally, the PAM01714 takes the most contemporary route, pairing a blue dial and blue canvas strap with a black DLC-coated stainless steel case.
Despite their different colour combinations, all three share the same fundamental architecture.
A 42mm case with serious diving credentials
Measuring 42 mm in diameter and 13.80 mm thick, the cases represent a more compact interpretation of the traditional Luminor format.
The dimensions are particularly interesting because the watches retain the functional character associated with the collection rather than moving towards the more refined positioning of the Luminor Due.

The stainless steel cases of the PAM01710 and PAM01711 combine brushed and polished surfaces, adding some contrast to the otherwise highly functional design. The PAM01714 takes a more monochromatic approach, using a black DLC coating across its stainless steel case for a completely matte appearance.
The familiar crown-protection bridge remains positioned on the right side of the case. More than simply being one of Panerai’s most recognisable design elements, the system is an important part of the visual identity that has remained closely associated with the Luminor since its earliest days.
The case back is solid stainless steel, helping maintain the watches’ tool-watch character.
Most importantly, all three references are rated to 500 metres of water resistance. This is a substantial figure for a 42 mm watch and gives these compact Luminors genuine diving credentials rather than simply making them smaller versions intended primarily for everyday wear.
A different interpretation of the Luminor dial
One of the most interesting aspects of these watches is what Panerai has chosen not to include.
Unlike many contemporary Luminor models, the PAM01710, PAM01711 and PAM01714 do not use Panerai’s familiar sandwich-dial construction. Instead, their dials follow the aesthetic of the historical references that inspired them.

The black dial of the PAM01710 and green dial of the PAM01711 use ecru Super-LumiNova numerals and indexes printed over an ivory luminous base. This creates a warm, slightly aged appearance while maintaining excellent low-light legibility.
The PAM01714 follows the same basic approach but introduces a blue dial with slightly darker beige-coloured markings, producing a warmer contrast against the cooler blue background.
All three feature the characteristic small-seconds register at 9 o’clock. Its design combines fine white markings with four luminous markers, extending the practical night-time visibility to the seconds indication as well.
The hour and minute hands are black and filled with Super-LumiNova matching the luminous elements of the dial. In darkness, the hands and indexes emit a green glow.
Another deliberate choice is the absence of a date display. With no date window interrupting the dial, the layout remains symmetrical and particularly close to the utilitarian spirit of the historical references.
Canvas straps complete the military-inspired character
Panerai pairs each watch with a 22/20 mm canvas strap, maintaining the practical aesthetic of the collection.
The PAM01710 receives a beige strap that contrasts with its black dial, while the PAM01711 and PAM01714 use green and blue straps respectively, matching their dials.

Each strap is secured by Panerai’s characteristic oversized trapezoidal buckle in brushed steel. On the PAM01714, the buckle receives the same black DLC treatment as the case.
The combination of canvas and large buckle gives the watches a distinctly military character, while the slight taper towards the buckle helps the strap sit more comfortably on the wrist.
Panerai P.980: automatic and three days of power reserve
Inside all three references is the Panerai P.980, an automatic mechanical movement designed to provide the robustness and autonomy expected from the Luminor.
The movement contains 23 jewels and 177 components, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a three-day power reserve from its single barrel.

An Incabloc shock-protection system adds another layer of resistance to everyday impacts.
The P.980 is also used in Panerai’s larger 44mm Luminor Marina models, giving these new 42 mm references a movement architecture already associated with the collection’s larger tool-watch offerings.
The combination of automatic winding and a 72-hour power reserve is particularly practical for a watch intended to be worn regularly. It also gives these Luminors a different character from the manually wound movements found in some of the brand’s more traditional references.
Three colours, three personalities
Although the PAM01710, PAM01711 and PAM01714 share the same technical foundations, their different executions give them noticeably different personalities.
The PAM01710 is the most traditional of the three. Its black dial, ecru details, stainless steel case and beige strap create a combination that immediately connects with the visual language most commonly associated with Panerai.

The PAM01711 introduces a more military flavour through its green dial and matching strap. The colour works particularly well with the warm luminous details and gives the otherwise familiar Luminor architecture a different character.
Then there is the PAM01714, which changes the formula considerably. Its blue dial and strap are combined with a black DLC case and buckle, giving the watch a darker and more contemporary presence.
Despite sharing the same dimensions and movement, the three references therefore cover quite different interpretations of the Luminor aesthetic.
The Panerai Luminor PAM01710 and PAM01711 are priced at € 6,500, while the PAM01714 is priced at € 7,500.
Our Opinion
What we find most interesting about these three new Luminors is that Panerai has not simply made a smaller version of an existing 44mm watch. The brand has gone back to an important chapter in its own history and used those early Luminor references as the starting point.
We had the opportunity to see the new Luminor models in June, and they were indeed impressive in person. The 42 mm proportions immediately caught our attention, particularly because they retain so much of the visual presence and unmistakable character of the larger Luminor models without feeling oversized on the wrist.
The absence of the sandwich dial may initially surprise some enthusiasts, but we think it makes sense in this particular context. These watches are not trying to reproduce the most familiar modern Luminor formula; instead, they revisit an important part of Panerai’s history and follow the dial construction of the original references that inspired them.
The 42 mm case is also an interesting move. We generally gravitate towards smaller watches, so the possibility of having the unmistakable Luminor architecture in a more compact format makes these references particularly appealing to us. At the same time, Panerai has avoided turning them into dressier alternatives by giving them a 500-metre water-resistance rating, a solid case back, canvas straps and the characteristic crown-protection bridge.
Of the three, the PAM01710 is the clearest expression of the classic Panerai formula, while the PAM01711 brings a more military character through its green dial. The PAM01714, however, is the one that stands out most to us. The combination of the blue dial and strap with the black DLC case gives the familiar Luminor design a noticeably different personality without losing its identity.
These are, ultimately, Luminors that take a step away from the traditional 44 mm formula without abandoning what makes the collection recognisable. For enthusiasts who appreciate Panerai’s design language but prefer a more compact format, the 42 mm case adds another dimension to the collection while keeping the technical specifications firmly in tool-watch territory.
