Ollech & Wajs Revives Iconic Caribbean 1000 For 60th Anniversary
Ollech & Wajs celebrates its 60th anniversary this year to mark the date it brings back its iconic Caribbean 1000 dive watch.
It was during the 50s and 60s when the main watch brands were fighting to present dive watches that were more capable of underwater exploration, that a small brand came up with a watch that stood out for its superior water resistance, which was the Ollech & Wajs through its Caribbean 1000.
The watchmaking brand, throughout its six decades of existence, has managed to remain resilient in the face of various difficulties, namely the Quartz crisis, having been acquired by Charles Le Menestrial in 2017 and since then it has been decided to revive the brand’s old glories.
The new Caribbean C-1000A comes with a design very similar to the original, adopting a brushed stainless steel case measuring 39.50mm in diameter by 15.80mm in thickness, triangular-shaped lugs, 12-hour bi-directional coin-edge bezel, with black insert and 20-minute scale, domed sapphire crystal, screwed crown at 3 o’clock and case back and the famous 1,000m of water resistance.
The black dial has a slightly different layout, with triangular markers at 12, 3 and 9 o’clock that, like the pencil hands, are filled with beige Super-LumiNova, the remaining hours feature white baton markers and a date window that travels from 3 to 6 o’clock with a white background.
Inside, where the ETA 2824 movement previously lived, now breathes the Soprod Newton Precision P092, which comes with 44 hours of power reserve, as ETA now only supplies the Swatch Group, regardless of this, the good news is that Ollech & Wajs who had still 56 of these movements in stock, decided to use them in the first 56 Caribbean C-1000A which, in addition to this bonus adds individual numbering.
The watches come attached to a one-piece yellow nylon strap with a steel pin buckle that can be purchased for CHF 1,856, or a steel Mesh bracelet with a folding clasp for CHF 1,982.
