Nivada Grenchen is no stranger to creating conversation-starting timepieces, and its latest release may be one of the brand’s most unexpected yet. Introducing the Antarctic Erotic 38 mm, a limited-production model that combines the vintage-inspired charm of the Antarctic collection with an unusual animated caseback concept and a conservation-focused partnership.

Far from being a simple novelty piece, this release builds on the established Antarctic platform while introducing a mechanical animation system integrated into the movement architecture.

Classic Antarctic Case Design

The new model is based on the familiar Antarctic case, crafted in stainless steel and measuring 38 mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.45 mm. These proportions remain faithful to the classic and versatile dimensions that have made the Antarctic line popular among enthusiasts looking for a vintage-inspired everyday watch. The case also offers 100 meters of water resistance, reinforcing its sporty and practical character.

Six Distinct Dial Variants

Nivada Grenchen is introducing the Antarctic Erotic in six dial variations, each bringing a different personality to the collection. The available colors include salmon, eggshell beige, black, brown, white, and tuxedo.

Beyond the color palette, the collection is also distinguished by three different display layouts. The salmon and eggshell beige models feature applied Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock, paired with elegant dauphine hands, giving these versions a refined vintage look.

The black, brown, and white editions adopt a more tool-watch-inspired aesthetic, with numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock and a distinctive handset composed of a sword-style minute hand and a circular hour hand, adding extra character to the dial.

Meanwhile, the tuxedo version stands apart with a sophisticated sector-style dial layout, complemented by an additional date window, making it the most classic and dress-oriented option in the lineup.

The Animated Caseback Mechanism

The most distinctive feature of this release is undoubtedly its animated caseback.

Turning the watch over reveals a playful moving scene featuring two penguins, with the animation activated directly through the winding action of the crown. Rather than functioning as a continuously running complication, the mechanism comes to life only when the wearer manually winds the watch, creating an interactive mechanical display.

This unusual feature is powered by a specially modified Soprod P024 automatic movement. For this release, Nivada Grenchen has reworked the movement’s ratchet wheel into a cam-shaped profile, allowing the rotational energy generated during winding to be converted into vertical mechanical motion that drives the animation.

Importantly, this system has been engineered so that it remains fully independent from the watch’s timekeeping performance. The movement continues to operate at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and delivers a 42-hour power reserve, ensuring that the playful complication does not compromise functionality.

More Than a Playful Concept

Beyond its unconventional design, this release also marks the beginning of a partnership between Nivada Grenchen and Oceanites, a non-profit organization focused on monitoring penguin populations and studying the Antarctic ecosystem.

As part of this collaboration, the brand has reportedly adopted a colony of 21,000 penguins, supporting research and conservation efforts linked to environmental awareness and climate change.

This gives the Antarctic Erotic 38mm an added layer of meaning, transforming it from a conversation piece into a watch connected to a broader conservation initiative.

Availability and Price

The salmon and eggshell beige versions will be available during a 69-hour pre-order window, while the remaining four variants will be offered for 6.9 days. Pre-orders are set to begin on April 30.

Pricing starts at € 1,600 on a leather strap, while the stainless steel bracelet version is priced at € 1,805.
