Nivada Grenchen Revives Vintage Style With New 35mm Antarctic Spider & Super Antarctic
For a few years now, the trend for large watches seems to be a thing of the past with watch aficionados opting for smaller sizes with many defining the 39 and 38mm measurements as the most consensual, however, this trend has been growing accentuated towards a more vintage style supported by the smaller and more elegant 36, 35 and 34mm sizes that could very soon become the new black.
Nivada Grenchen, through its Antarctic line, has been proving this trend, with watches with cases not exceeding 38mm, having also recently experimented with the launch of the “Antarctic” in 35mm in four variants that quickly sold out and it is on this path that it is now launching the “Super Antarctic” and the “Antarctic Spider” in 35mm, each of them in two variants, and whose fate must already be set.
The watches follow the configuration of their larger siblings and the Antarctic 35mm, presented on the outside in a round case in polished steel measuring 35mm wide by 11.10mm high, smooth bezel, double sapphire crystal, fluted crown at 3 o’clock, solid case back with golden medallion engraved with the traditional Penguin and the inscriptions of the brand and collection, and finally, 50m water resistance.
Inside we find the 18-jewel Swiss Landeron 21 hand-wound movement, with or without date, which runs at 28,800 Vph and offers up to 36 hours of power reserve.
The Antarctic Spider 35mm comes with a sunray brushed silver or a glossy black dial with a crosshair design complemented by eight spider-leg-like hour markers which, like the Dauphine’s hands, come filled with beige Super-LumiNova. A date window with a magnifying and white background next to the crown and on the opposite side at 9 o’clock the brand and collection inscriptions.
The Super Antarctic 35mm presents a glossy black dial with the original layout set by sword minute hand, lollipop hour hand, thin triangle seconds hand, large triangle indexes at the 4 cardinal points and baton hour markers all filled with white or beige Super-LumiNova, depending on the chosen variant.
Either model is complemented by a wide choice of leather, rubber or steel bracelets, with prices starting at €935.
Our Opinion
Nivada Grenchen is without a doubt one of the brands we like to talk about the most as it keeps all the focus on a rich historical past building modern timepieces with a classic look.
The new bet on the 35mm size sounds like music to our ears and beyond, with demand proving it.
To conclude, we liked the new Antarctic Spider and Super Antarctic 35mm and we are looking forward to trying them out and waiting for the arrival of the Antarctic 3.6.9 35mm, which is the only one missing.
