New Seiko 5 Sports
I must confess that I get pretty excited every time I hear about Seiko new releases, me and probably a bunch of people, if there is a brand that offers real value to the market for such a small amount of money, and do it such well like no other, that brand is Seiko. But when the name announced is Seiko 5 Sports, which resembles the old Seiko SKX, we get a feeling of a déjà vu.
Now, let’s talk about this watch, it has exactly the same case of the SKX (okay, it grew a little and the case size is now 0,5mm larger), the case back is no more solid, it was replaced by a glass case, the old movement of 90’s 7S26 was replaced by the “new” one 4R36, the crown is still on the 4 o´clock position with crown guards, but is no more a screw-down crown, the day-date kept on 3 o’clock position, the old 200 meters water resistance fall down to just now 100 meters and the proud ISO 6425 certified dive watch, own by the old SKX doesn´t exist anymore. This new release has the mark “Seiko 5” on the dial, which means, it has the 5 features defined by Seiko, but today we will not talk about these 5 features or the history beyond “Seiko 5”, let’s keep it for another opportunity.
As an owner of a Seiko SKX007, I love the look of the old SKX, almost the same case size, the diversity of dials and the new case “hard coating”, despite I’d prefer to see it on PVD (but it’s okay attending the price), and last but not least, the improvement of hand winding. About what I like less…the new series SRPD doesn’t offer a small case for the thinner wrists as used to happen with the SKX013, the “lost” of ISO-certified dive watch, even knowing the majority of SKX owners never will use it to dive (100 meters of water resistance is more than enough for what they need), nevertheless, those who have it may use it proudly.
Considering the fact that old SKX series was discontinued (but still yet available on the market in some places), if I wasn’t an owner of one SKX and had the chance to pick up one between the new SRPD series and the old SXK series I’ve no doubt that I’d choose the old SKX, but if you ask me as an owner of an SKX if I’d consider the possibility in the future to get one of this new series I’d probably answer yes, and I have already elected one, the SRPD065.
