New Bulova Lunar Pilot Celebrates Apollo 15 With Red Panda Dial
On August 2, 1971, North American astronaut David Scott set foot on the moon during the Apollo 15 mission and on his wrist he carried the Bulova Chronograph ref. 88510/01 which years later would serve as inspiration for the contemporary Lunar Pilot watch.
Today, on the verge of completing 53 years of this historic milestone, the watchmaking brand brings a new variant of the Lunar Pilot that stands out for coming with a red inverted Panda dial influenced by a total lunar eclipse phenomenon often called “blood moon”.
The bold red dial comes with a textured pattern reminiscent of the surface of the moon, with three silver registers with a snailed background consisting of a 1/20th-seconds counter, a running seconds and a 60-minute subdial at 3-6-9 o’clock matching the inner tachymeter bezel, applied hour markers and pencil hands all filled with luminescent material, a chronograph centre seconds hand and the brand’s lettering at noon.
On the outside, it wears the traditional 43.50mm Tonneau-shaped stainless steel case that comes with a mainly brushed finish, sapphire glass, fluted crown at 3 o’clock with the brand’s logo and surrounded by two drop-shaped pushers, screwed solid case back and 50m water resistance.
Powered by Citizen’s High Precision Quartz NP20, which according to the brand is 8 times better than a standard Quartz movement, it reaches 262 kHz.
In addition to the 3-link steel bracelet with a deployment clasp, the watch is supplied with an additional black NATO leather strap with red stitching and steel pin buckle, which is now on sale for USD 895.
