Naoya Hida & Co., the Tokyo-based independent watchmaking brand known for its refined, hand-finished timepieces rooted in mid-century design, introduces its most technically sophisticated model to date: the NH Type 6A Perpetual Calendar. This release marks a significant development in the brand’s portfolio, integrating a complex calendar mechanism while staying true to the house’s vintage-inspired design ethos.

Case and Construction

The NH Type 6A is constructed from 904L stainless steel, a premium-grade alloy valued for its resistance to corrosion and its bright, lasting finish. The case measures 37 millimeters in diameter and 11.50 millimeters in thickness, dimensions that reflect Naoya Hida’s ongoing commitment to creating elegant, classically sized watches. The brushed surfaces of the case band provide a utilitarian aesthetic, while the polished concave bezel adds a subtle visual contrast that elevates the overall design.

The perpetual calendar mechanism requires several correction pushers, which are placed conventionally on the flanks of the case. These are not hidden or recessed, but rather left exposed in a way that prioritizes functionality and respects traditional watchmaking conventions.

Dial Craftsmanship

One of the defining features of Naoya Hida’s watches is the extraordinary level of craftsmanship applied to each dial, and the NH Type 6A exemplifies this with exceptional execution. The dial is made of Argentium silver, an enhanced version of sterling silver known for its resistance to tarnish. Each numeral and every marking on the sub-dials are hand-engraved by artisan Keisuke Kano, and then filled with cashew lacquer, a synthetic alternative to traditional Urushi lacquer. This technique lends depth and character to the dial, while improving contrast and legibility.

The layout of the dial adheres to the classic perpetual calendar format. The date is displayed on a sub-dial at the 9 o’clock position, while the day of the week appears on the opposite side at 3 o’clock. The month and leap year cycle are combined in a sub-dial located at 6 o’clock. Timekeeping is handled by central hour and minute hands crafted in hand-polished 18k yellow gold, and the calendar indications are shown using heat-blued steel hands, creating a pleasing contrast in both color and material.

Movement and Mechanics

At the heart of the NH Type 6A is a hand-wound mechanical movement developed in collaboration with Austrian watchmakers Habring². The base caliber is built on the robust and time-tested Valjoux 7750 gear train, which has been customized and refined to meet Naoya Hida’s standards. The perpetual calendar functionality is powered by a module from Dubois-Depraz, a well-regarded specialist in complex horological mechanisms.

This movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and delivers a power reserve of approximately 45 hours. A sapphire crystal caseback provides a clear view of the movement’s finishing, which includes circular Geneva stripes, finely polished bevels, and heat-blued screws, all executed to a high artisanal standard.

Production and Availability

The NH Type 6A Perpetual Calendar will be produced in extremely limited numbers, with only 10 examples scheduled for manufacture between 2025 and 2026. It will be available through two distinct channels. Interested collectors may apply to purchase the watch through Naoya Hida’s official website, where a dedicated page will be live from May 19 to May 22, 2025. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-June. Alternatively, the watch will also be offered through The Armoury, with a separate lottery-based allocation running from May 21 through June 15, 2025.

Pricing

The NH Type 6A is priced at approximately €45,000 before taxes. Given the complexity of the watch, the depth of its finishing, and the exclusivity of production, this price positions it as a serious collector’s piece within the high-end independent watchmaking landscape.
