Minase Mastercraft J3 Offers A Refined 37mm Interpretation Of The M3

Minase is known for pushing case construction in distinctive directions, but the Japanese manufacturer’s history also includes a much quieter design language. The new Mastercraft J3 revisits that side of the brand, taking inspiration from the M3 introduced during Minase’s early years and translating its restrained proportions into a contemporary 37 mm automatic watch.

Rather than reproducing the original model, the J3 refines its proportions, finishing and dial construction while becoming one of the most accessible watches in the current Minase collection.

A Compact Stainless Steel Case

The Mastercraft J3 measures 37 mm in diameter and 9.90 mm thick, making it notably more compact than the original M3, which measured 38.80 mm by 10.80 mm. The reduction gives the new model a particularly versatile footprint, while the traditional round case keeps the overall design understated.

Case construction is especially significant for Minase. The company was established in 2005 by Kyowa Co., a Japanese precision-tool manufacturer with expertise in producing the tooling used for watch cases. That industrial background remains reflected in Minase’s approach to machining and finishing.

The J3 combines circular brushing on the lugs with highly polished surfaces on the case sides and bezel. The latter uses Minase’s characteristic Sallaz polishing, a technique known for producing a particularly clean, distortion-free mirror finish.

The result is a case that may be considerably more restrained than some of Minase’s more elaborate creations, but still provides plenty of detail when viewed closely.

A Layered Dial Design

The minimalist concept continues onto the dial, although Minase has avoided making it completely flat or visually plain.

At its centre is a sand-grain textured surface, complemented by applied hour markers and a peripheral minute track. This layered construction gives the dial additional depth and creates subtle contrasts between the different surfaces.

Minase offers the Mastercraft J3 with three dial colours: grey, beige and black. Each option changes the character of the watch slightly, from the monochromatic appearance of the grey version to the warmer presentation of beige and the more conventional look of black.

The hands and markers are arranged around the dial without unnecessary complications, keeping the focus on legibility and the textures of the individual components.

Japanese Automatic Movement

Powering the J3 is the Miyota 90S5, an automatic movement from Citizen’s Japanese movement manufacturer. It provides approximately 42 hours of power reserve.

The 90S5 is also well suited to the compact dimensions of the J3. Its relatively slim construction helps Minase keep the overall watch below the 10mm mark while retaining automatic winding.

A New Entry Point for Minase

Perhaps the most significant aspect of the Mastercraft J3 is its position within the Minase range.

The watch is priced at USD 2,150, placing it considerably below the brand’s more expensive collections. That makes the J3 an accessible way into Minase’s case-making expertise without moving away from the brand’s characteristic attention to finishing.
