MeisterSinger’s Tribute To One Of Lisbon’s Most Iconic Landmarks

There are some landmarks that become inseparable from the identity of a city. In Lisbon, few are as instantly recognizable as the 25 de Abril Bridge. Rising above the Tagus in a striking red silhouette, the bridge has been part of the city’s visual identity for six decades, connecting Lisbon with Almada while standing as a reminder of Portugal’s transformation through the second half of the 20th century.

Now, that unmistakable landmark has found a new interpretation on the wrist.

To celebrate the bridge’s 60th anniversary, German watchmaker MeisterSinger has joined forces with Lisbon’s Ferreira Marques Jewellery to create the Edition 25 de Abril, a limited series of just 25 watches. Rather than simply placing the bridge’s image on a dial, the collaboration uses its architecture, colour and history as the inspiration for a watch filled with discreet references to Lisbon.

A bridge with a story

Opened in 1966, the bridge spans more than 2.2 kilometres across the Tagus, carrying six lanes of road traffic on its upper level and a railway deck below. Its proportions and red-painted steel structure have inevitably drawn comparisons with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, but the 25 de Abril Bridge has developed a character entirely its own.

Originally inaugurated as the Salazar Bridge, it was renamed following the Carnation Revolution of 1974. The change transformed its name into something much more than a geographical reference, linking one of Lisbon’s most familiar structures with a pivotal moment in Portuguese history.

That combination of engineering, architecture and national identity provides the backdrop for MeisterSinger’s latest special edition.

Lisbon’s red, MeisterSinger’s single hand

The most immediate connection to the bridge comes from the dial.

Finished in a deep red with a sunburst treatment, its surface captures the colour that has become synonymous with the structure. As the light moves across the dial, the finish adds a subtle sense of depth rather than turning the watch into an overtly themed souvenir.

At the centre sits one of MeisterSinger’s defining characteristics: its single white hand.

Instead of displaying the time with separate hour and minute hands, the hand points towards the hour markings, encouraging the wearer to read time in a broader and calmer way. Against the red dial, the white hand creates a particularly strong contrast, while reinforcing the minimalist character for which MeisterSinger is known.

The hour numerals and applied indices are rendered in dark grey, a restrained detail that can be interpreted as a reference to the steel structure and roadway of the bridge.

Look a little closer, however, and the design becomes more personal.

The numerals 2 and 5 are picked out in white, a discreet reference to the bridge’s name. Around them, thin lines mark the quarter-hours, while small dots indicate the five-minute intervals.

It is a clever approach to the theme: the watch doesn’t need to shout about its Portuguese inspiration. Instead, the details reveal themselves gradually.

Another particularly subtle element sits beneath the edition name. A dark grey oval plaque carries an engraved silhouette of the 25 de Abril Bridge. It is small enough to remain understated, but distinctive enough to reward anyone who takes a closer look at the dial.

The result feels more like a collection of visual references than a conventional commemorative watch.

The Pangaea case

The Edition 25 de Abril is housed in MeisterSinger’s 40 mm Pangaea case, a size that gives the dial enough presence while remaining relatively restrained on the wrist.

Inside, the watch is powered by the Swiss-made Sellita SW200 automatic movement, a familiar and proven calibre in the industry. It offers a power reserve of approximately 38 hours, providing the mechanical heart expected from an automatic MeisterSinger.

The watch is paired with a grey suede strap, whose muted tone complements the red dial without competing with it. But the Portuguese connection doesn’t end there.

Each watch also comes with an additional handcrafted Portuguese cork strap, bringing one of the country’s most distinctive natural materials into the design.

It is perhaps one of the nicest details of the collaboration because it connects the watch to Portugal in a way that goes beyond the bridge itself.

The bridge returns on the case back

Turn the watch over and the theme becomes unmistakable.

The solid case back carries a large engraving of the 25 de Abril Bridge, reproducing its distinctive silhouette across the rear of the watch. Each example is individually numbered, reinforcing the exclusivity of an edition limited to only 25 pieces.

The presentation follows the same philosophy. Each watch arrives in MeisterSinger’s new book-shaped presentation case, with a specially designed interior and a numbered certificate confirming its place in the series.

Just 25 pieces for a Lisbon icon

The MeisterSinger Edition 25 de Abril is ultimately an interesting meeting point between German watchmaking and Portuguese identity.

The watch retains the distinctive character of MeisterSinger — particularly its single-hand display and restrained design language — while incorporating references to one of Portugal’s most recognizable landmarks. The result avoids turning the bridge into a decorative afterthought; instead, its colour, silhouette and name are woven throughout the watch in different degrees of subtlety.

With only 25 pieces being produced, the Edition 25 de Abril is also unlikely to be a watch encountered frequently, even in its home city.

Priced at € 2,690, the limited edition offers collectors something more specific than another commemorative timepiece: a mechanical object that captures a small piece of Lisbon’s visual identity and the story behind one of its most enduring landmarks.

Six decades after the bridge first crossed the Tagus, its silhouette now has another place to be seen — this time, on the wrist.
