Meet The Expedition Capstone Automatic: Timex’s Latest Mechanical Field Watch
Timex has expanded its modern Expedition lineup with the introduction of the Expedition Capstone Automatic, a mechanical evolution of the recently refreshed field-watch design. The new model preserves the rugged, utilitarian aesthetic that defines the Capstone series while adding an automatic movement and several functional updates that enhance everyday practicality.
Familiar Field-Watch Design, Updated for Everyday Wear
At its core, the Expedition Capstone Automatic keeps the same 39 mm stainless steel case found in the quartz version and maintains the clean, legible styling characteristic of a field watch. The case now measures 12 mm in thickness, only one millimeter more than its battery-powered counterpart due to the mechanical movement inside.

In this updated lineup, Timex differentiates the models by finish. The version supplied with the fabric strap features a black coated steel case, giving it a more rugged and tactical look. Meanwhile, the variant offered on the stainless steel bracelet comes in a brushed steel finish, delivering a more classic and versatile appearance. Both versions include a matching crown and a practical date window at 3 o’clock.
Dual-Time Readability
One of the key updates in the automatic version appears on the dial. Timex has added both 12-hour and 24-hour markings, allowing wearers to read the time in the format they prefer. This is especially useful for activities where military time is standard or for users who want a straightforward way to reference both systems. Nighttime visibility has also been refined. Instead of fully lumed indices, the automatic model provides lume on the hour markers, numerals, and hands, offering clear low-light readability while maintaining a more understated design.

Strap Options for Different Tastes
The Expedition Capstone Automatic continues to feature a quick-release fabric strap with a pin buckle on the black-coated model, keeping the watch aligned with its outdoor-ready identity. For those who prefer a more elevated appearance or enjoy the feel of metal on the wrist, the brushed steel version is paired with a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp. While the bracelet option slightly increases the price, it adds versatility and a more refined aesthetic while still retaining the collection’s accessible appeal.

A New Automatic Movement with an Exhibition Caseback
The most significant upgrade in this new model is the transition from a quartz mechanism to a self-winding automatic movement. Although Timex does not officially disclose the caliber used, it is widely suspected to be the Japanese Miyota 8210, a reliable movement featuring 21 jewels, a beat rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour, and a power reserve of up to 40 hours. This brings mechanical convenience to the Capstone Automatic, allowing the watch to wind naturally with wrist motion and eliminating the need for battery replacements.

The watch is also equipped with an exhibition caseback, offering a clear view of the movement inside—an uncommon feature at this price point that adds another layer of appeal.
Pricing and Availability
The Timex Expedition Capstone Automatic is available now on the brand’s website. The black-coated model with the fabric strap is priced at € 309, while the brushed-steel version with the stainless steel bracelet is priced at € 329. Even with the inclusion of an automatic movement and an exhibition caseback, the watch remains positioned as an affordable option within the mechanical field-watch category.
