Leica Expands Its Horological Journey With The New ZM 12
Leica, the iconic camera brand, first ventured into watchmaking three years ago with the launch of the ZM 1, followed by the ZM 2 and ZM 11. Now, the brand refines its approach with the release of the new Leica ZM 12, featuring a more compact 39mm case, a departure from the previous 41mm models.
The Leica ZM 12 arrives in four distinct colorways and two different materials. The stainless steel versions are available in blue orange, green black, and silver grey, while the titanium variant comes in an elegant brown black with gilt accents. Maintaining the round case design reminiscent of the ZM 11, the new ZM 12 adopts revised dimensions of 39mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness. The timepiece features a sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown at 3 o’clock, an open case back with domed sapphire crystal, and Leica’s signature red dot fasteners for easy strap changes. With a water resistance of 100 meters, the watch is built for versatility and durability.
The dial construction of the ZM 12 stands out with its intricate two-layer design. The top layer features a horizontal groove motif, complemented by baton-style hour markers and hands filled with Super-LumiNova for enhanced readability. A recessed small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock, adorned with a snailed background, adds a refined touch. A printed minute track runs along the outer edge, while the brand’s signature sits prominently at noon, reinforcing Leica’s unmistakable identity in the world of horology.
Powering the Leica ZM 12 is the Caliber LA-3002 automatic movement, developed in collaboration with Chronode SA. With an impressive accuracy of -4 / +6 seconds per day, the movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a substantial 60-hour power reserve. Its openworked rotor and sandblasted bridges add an extra level of sophistication to the watch’s mechanics, making it a true collector’s piece.
The ZM 12 offers a wide selection of strap options, including an orange rubber strap with an inverted “Clous de Paris” motif, a smooth black rubber strap, a beige textile strap, and a stainless steel or titanium bracelet. Strap prices range from USD 550 to USD 1,350, allowing customization based on preference. The stainless steel editions of the Leica ZM 12 are priced at USD 6,250, while the titanium version is available for USD 7,000. The blue orange edition will be released on April 17, adding further excitement to this highly anticipated collection.
