Latest Picks From Our Editors Up To €5,000

Two days ago we challenged our editors to each to submit three suggestions for watches for different budgets, today we come to the end with the presentation of their suggestions for the last level between €2,001 and €5,000. Grand Seiko SBGX347

The Grand Seiko SBGX347 appeared a few months ago, and what I like most about it is all its simplicity and unpretentiousness, with a 34mm steel case with classic lines, white dial with silver accents, it comes equipped with a quartz movement that offers a precision of about 10 seconds per year and is offered with the black leather strap. It seems like the perfect choice to complement my other two choices (Baltic MR01 and Doxa SUB300T) and make a versatile mini collection. For those who “turn up their noses” at quartz movements, I would suggest the Grand Seiko SBGW231 which is quite similar, but slightly larger and comes with a mechanical movement.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 34

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual, as well as the Datejust, are entry-level in the Rolex world, so it seemed logical to raise the bar and introduce the Oyster Perpetual in the collection, slightly over budget, but I believe that for €50 no one will get upset and after all, we are talking about a Rolex, who would not add it to their collection for a few “changes”. Probably many will consider 34mm too small, but for those who have never tried a Rolex the square shape of the case makes the 34mm look much more like 36 or 38mm, and there is always the option for the silver dial that makes it look bigger on the wrist.

Omega De Ville Trésor Quartz 36mm

My last choice once again fell on the dress watch, after all, which woman doesn’t like to be elegant, the range of options at Omega De Ville Trésor was enormous, but the one that most attracted me in this variant was the beautiful lacquered white mother-of-pearl dial, complemented by Roman numerals and hands in 18k Sedna gold, but also details like the diamond paving on each side of the bezel as the diamond on the crown. It seems to me that it complements the rest of my collection quite well, curiously, my three suggestions ended up all coming with quartz movement, which I don’t dislike, but I also take the opportunity to say that it wasn’t premeditated and that I also like mechanical movements, that I promise to include them in the next opportunity.

Panerai Luminor Base Logo 44mm

My choice of the Panerai is directly linked to its history with the Royal Italian Navy, although I’m a tall guy and the 44mm diameter of the Panerai isn’t exaggerated for my stature probably for a slightly larger budget I would probably go for a 38mm Luminor Due, but I still like the Luminor, especially for the clean dial with the traditional Arabic numerals in positions 3-6-9-12 and the logo in the bottom that distinguishes it from other models. Taking stock of my small collection, I cannot fail to mention a gap, the absence of including a dress watch, which I recognize would give it a better balance.€ 4,900

IWC Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII

I have always admired the IWC, especially for the pilot’s watches, I think that in addition to being part of its history, they knew overtime to perpetuate this legacy, which in recent years has been expanding, so for my last choice I decided to opt for a Pilot’s watch and what better if not the classic Mark XVIII, with white/silver dial as it complements my choice of the day before, the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph which comes with a black dial. In the end, and despite not including a dress watch in my choices, after all, I’m a practical guy, the end result seems quite balanced as both Hamilton and IWC didn’t leave me frowned upon in more formal events.
