Kurono Tokyo Vermilion Chronograph: A New Release In Striking Orange
Kurono Tokyo, the accessible brand created by renowned independent Japanese watchmaker Hajime Asaoka, has introduced a striking new addition to its chronograph lineup: the Vermilion Chronograph. Known for bringing Asaoka’s refined design language to a wider audience, Kurono continues to blend traditional aesthetics with reliable Japanese-made movements, and this latest release stands out for its vivid dial and carefully considered proportions.
Compact, Vintage-Inspired Case
The Vermilion Chronograph stays true to Kurono’s design philosophy with a 38 mm stainless steel case that leans toward vintage sizing. At 13.50 mm thick and just under 47 mm lug-to-lug, it offers balanced proportions that sit comfortably on the wrist. A box-shaped sapphire crystal enhances the retro appeal, while classic pump-style pushers reinforce the chronograph character. The caseback is closed, and water resistance is rated at 30 meters, making this more of a dress chronograph than a sports companion.

Vermilion Dial with Cultural Roots
The centerpiece of this release is its orange-red dial, a bold shade rooted in Japanese tradition. Frequently used in torii gates, samurai armor, and symbolic designs tied to good fortune, the hue carries strong cultural meaning.

Achieving this color was not a simple process. Asaoka’s atelier tests pigments by exposing dials to sunlight for months, simulating over a decade of natural wear. Only two pigments proved resilient enough to withstand fading: selenium red and vermilion. The result is a vivid orange-red tone designed to last.

The dial features black recessed subdials, applied polished pearl indices, and domed, polished hands for a refined contrast. A discreet date window at 6 o’clock maintains symmetry while keeping functionality intact.
Movement: Seiko NE86
Inside, the watch houses the Seiko NE86 automatic chronograph movement (also known as the 8R46). This is a modern caliber notable for its column wheel and vertical clutch architecture, features often associated with higher-end chronographs. Operating at 28,800 vph (4Hz), the movement offers a 45-hour power reserve, ensuring robust performance behind the refined exterior.
Strap & Wearing Experience
The Vermilion Chronograph is delivered on a black leather strap, keeping the attention on the striking dial. The understated strap choice also reinforces the watch’s versatility, balancing its bold face with a classic presentation.

Availability & Price
As with most Kurono Tokyo releases, availability is highly limited. The Vermilion Chronograph will be sold exclusively through Kurono salons in Aoyama (Tokyo) and Shanghai, with no online ordering option. Sales open on August 22, 2025, and each customer will be limited to a single purchase.
