When we looking for a dress watch, traditional brands such as Cartier, Omega, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Breguet, among many others come to our mind immediately and almost all with unaffordable prices for many people.
Of course, we can always look for a vintage watch from these brands and we almost always find interesting pieces at more inviting prices, but far from the bargains that were possible to find a few years ago, however, there is a watch that, since its appearance in the 60s, has been assumed as an affordable dress watch and which may very well be the cheapest and prettiest dress watch, we’re talking about the Timex Marlin. The Marlin emerged in the 60s as a dress watch accessible to everyone, with a price around $ 15 which today and considering inflation would not exceed $ 100, whose main characteristics were to provide time reliably and be affordable. The Marlin featured a steel case with a small crown, a diameter of around 37 mm and thin thickness, water-resistant (if you were wondering about the provenance of its fish name there is the answer), mechanical movement (manual or automatic), domed crystal, sunburst dial, with three thin stick-shaped hands and Arabic, Roman or dash hour markers.
Today it is still possible to find some of these vintage models on sale for interesting prices, however, we warn that the task is not easy as there are a lot of people in this game and finding one in good condition requires a lot of patience.
But if you like the retro look of the Timex Marlin and don’t mind about a revival, you should consider the Timex Marlin Reissue of 2017, which resembles almost everything the model launched in the 60s, although with some changes, namely the fact that the case has a slightly smaller diameter, now with 34 mm and a price a bit higher of around € 200, however, it still incorporates a manual mechanical movement (although it also has several models with automatic movement, released later), stainless steel case and sunburst dial. Available options include black or silver/white dials, with Arabic hour markers or California dials – hours divided half with Roman numerals (from 10 to 2 o’clock) and the other half with Arabic numerals (from 4 to 8 o’clock) and with the 3, 6 and 9 hours replaced with a dash and 12 hours replaced with an inverted triangle.
Lastly, we warn you that just as the original of these watches from the previous century quickly sold out, the same has happened with the reissue since its launch in 2017 and so don’t be surprised that you have to wait some time to acquire one of these models, but for sure you won’t regret it and the wait will be worth it.
