Introducing the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph “Panda” Dial
Just over a month away from the opening of the biggest annual watchmaking fair, Vacheron Constantin anticipates and presents a new variant of the Overseas Chronograph with a Panda dial.
The new Overseas Chronograph, which features a silver dial and three black registers, adds to the collection and increases the options for consumers, now having five variants (six if we consider the limited edition in titanium and steel that continues to be available on the website) available in chronograph version.
On the outside, the new Panda dial continues to wear the traditional stainless steel case measuring 42.5mm in diameter by 13.7mm thick with an essentially brushed finish, bezel in the shape of a Maltese cross with a polished finish, screw-down crown flanked by two screw-lock pushers, sapphire glass on the front and case back and 150m water resistance.
The dial that forms the main attraction of the latest Overseas Chronograph features a black chapter ring, a sun brush silver dial with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 and running seconds at 9 all in black. In addition, applied hour markers and hands filled with luminescent material and a framed date window at 4 ½ o’clock.
Inside, the In-house Caliber 5200 continues to live, the column wheel chronograph operates at 28,800 Vph and offers up to 52 hours of power reserve that can be observed through the open case back, highlighting the 22k yellow gold rotor carved and engraved with the name of the brand bearing the Maltese cross.
The watch is offered with the usual “integrated” steel bracelet and two black straps, one in rubber and the other in leather with grey stitching. Needless to say, they all come with the quick-change strap system.
The watch is available in the brand’s official boutiques and authorized retailers for €37,600, exactly the same price as the other two stainless steel variants available including the blue dial variant which is exclusive to the brand boutique.
Our Opinion
The introduction of the Panda dial in the Overseas Chronograph collection does not exactly represent a novelty as it already counts with the inverted Panda dial, but it undoubtedly offers greater diversity to the purists, opening a new window in a more sporty perspective and also at a time when the dials whites (although in this case, it’s silver) have been gaining fans.
For us, it is clear that there is a separation between the six chronographs in the collection, on the one hand, the two exclusive boutique models that together with the rose gold variant with a silver dial constitute a more formal and elegant watch, and on the other a sportier, more casual and relaxed formed by the ‘two’ Panda dials and the limited edition in titanium and stainless steel, which remains our favourite.
