Introducing the Tudor Black Bay Ceramic
It is becoming usual that the periods leading up to the launch of new Tudor models are marked by great expectations among its public, moreover, as has been happening for some years with the mother brand Rolex, which is therefore not new, it is part of the strategic marketing for these brands that take many years of this and know how to do it like no one else.
So, since at least a week ago, when this new launch was hidden by the brand, that the many fans and some specialized publications have been placing their bets, which is also not new, I confess that I end up having fun reading and seeing all those desires stamped on social media, in an unbridled attempt to get it right as if it were a mere game of luck. It should be clarified here that I am not being sarcastic because I also generate my expectations that are nothing more than desires and that rarely come true, I just choose not to divulge them because I think that they would add nothing, however, this is the reason why the industry is alive and well and continues to make the hearts of all of us enthusiasts beat.
From “dream” to reality
Many of the expectations that were publicized and frustrated, of course, centered on the possibility of the appearance of a new Black Bay Fifty-Eight, and here, whether he likes it or not, he is the keeper of the Black Bay line and I suspect that over there it will remain for a long time, another of the expectations was the possibility of the appearance of not yet much, but already disclosed, future Tudor Marine Nationale whose speculations focus on how it will be reborn, on the seal of BB58 or Pelagos. I have the opinion, if not the desire, that it appears on the shape of the Pelagos, with a perhaps smaller size around 39/40 mm, in fact, that is the reason why I have been postponing the entry of a BB58 or Pelagos in my modest collection. But going to reality, Tudor’s new launch came to reveal a new 41 mm Black Bay Ceramic, which should make many fans question about the bet on the continuity of that size, I confess that I have the same doubts and that I would like to see sales figures for the last years of Black Bay 41 mm and BB58 and compare them, maybe we would have a surprise, but I don’t think so, time will tell.
The new Black Bay Ceramic
As implied, the most prominent feature of the new Black Bay is its ceramic case and bezel, which gives it a stealthy look typical of many tool watches that feature a black PVD coating, which is not the case here, as the case is made of matte black ceramics, we remind you here that this is not the first Black Bay in ceramics, in 2019 the Black Bay Ceramic One was created in the form of a prototype that was auctioned in favor of research to cure muscular dystrophy.
Internally, the Black Bay Ceramic presents a new movement, the In-house MT5602-1U, which is the first Tudor movement certified by METAS, which among the others certifies the watch’s resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss, until now the only brand certified by METAS was Omega, which is now no longer the only brand to bear this title, besides offering the same 70 hours of power reserve for the rest of the line. The new movement is possible to be observed through the open case back, it seems to be a trend that has come to stay since the last Watches & Wonders with the disclosure of the two new BB58s, however here and although I am not a fan of the open case back on the BB line for the reasons that I explained earlier in another article, it seems more appropriate in view of the all-black finish including the oscillating weight.
There is also a novelty on the dial, such as two lines of text at 6 o’clock with the inscription on the first line of “Black Bay”, the first time that it happens on the entire Black Bay line, preceded by “Master Chronometer”, which replaces the three lines of previous text indicate the water resistance capacity and the inscription “Chronometer Officially Certified”.
The watch is offered with two straps, a hybrid black leather and rubber strap with a folding clasp in 316L steel treated with black PVD and a black fabric strap with a cream band. It is already available in official stores and retailers of the brand at a price of € 4,550.
