Introducing The Seiko SJE093 – A New Recreation Of The 1965 Diver’s
The historic Seiko 62MAS the first professional Diver’s watch from 1965, which since 2017 has been a source of inspiration for the emergence of several recreations essentially through the SLA and SPB series, now appears in the new SJE093 interaction that is so far the most similar to the original and that also debuts a new Caliber.
While in previous iterations the stainless steel case ranged from 39mm to 42mm, far away from the dimensions of 38mm in diameter and 13mm in thickness of the original, the most recent recreation uses a case with exactly the same diameter and a thickness of just 12.50 mm thanks to the new and elegant internal movement. The case features a circular brushed finish on the outside, domed sapphire crystal, a 60-minute unidirectional black bezel with hard-coated and a lume pip, a screw-down crown, screw-in case back that features the dolphin engraved like 1965 original and now adds individual numbering, and 200m of water resistance.
The sunburst grey dial comes with rectangular flat applied hour markers that like the hands are filled with Lumibrite, a central lollipop seconds hand, a framed date window at 3 o’clock and a track minute scale painted in white that matches the hue of the inscriptions from the original at 12 and 6 o’clock with the exception of the update of water resistance from the previous 150m to the current 200m.
Inside, shines the new Caliber 6L37 that operates at 28,800 Vph, resistant to magnetic fields up to 4,800 A/m, and offers up to 45 hours of power reserve, but which presents a “humble” accuracy of -15 / +25 seconds per day, which is the main Achilles heel of this movement and therefore of this watch.
The watch is attached to the traditional black Tropic-style rubber strap and comes in a special retro-style box where Seiko diver’s watches from the 1960s used to come.
This is a limited edition of 1,965 units that pays tribute to the birth year of the first Diver’s watch, which will be available from August 2023 and can be purchased for the price. €3,700.
Our Opinion
We have no doubt that it will delight many fans and enthusiasts, as like all previous recreations it continues to be one of the most desired Diver’s watches on the market.
We especially liked the new dimensions, not only because they are very close to the original but also because there is a growing perception that a watch with more moderate dimensions becomes more comfortable on the wrist but also more elegant, without this often implying sacrificing the watch’s capabilities.
What we liked less, the new movement, it seems to us that the almost € 4,000 asked for the watch justified a better accuracy that, compared to other strong competitors, is clearly at a disadvantage. However, we cannot fail to give a positive note to the reduced thickness of the Caliber.
