Introducing the Rolex Submariner Ref. 124060, No-Date 41mm
Before starting this article, I was figuring out how to do this – Rolex new releases – in a single article and it didn’t take me long to realize what was quite obvious, it would be impossible, so in this article, I will just talk about the new Submariner 124060 and leave the other releases for other articles.
Rolex is one of the largest watch brands in the world and probably the best known and most valued brand in its category at the marketing level, consequently when they announce new releases are common in the days and even previous months generating a lot of buzz with their audience and this year despite all known contingencies were no different and so it was interesting once again to see and read on the social media what the people expected and realize that most of their expectations did not come true, on the one hand, because our desires are what they want they are and do not go beyond or determine the brand agenda, on the other hand, because Rolex knows better than anyone how to manage its own audience.
In the first reactions, we saw many enthusiasts showing some frustration with the new Submariner, the most iconic of all Rolex, the new size of 41mm was not in the plans of many, historically the size of the Submariner case has always fluctuated between 39 and 40mm, but it never went beyond that. Just a month ago, we saw Tudor, its subsidiary, launch a new 39mm variant of the Black Bay Fifth-Eight, the brand’s bestseller due to its small size, which makes it more difficult to explain the reason for the increase in the size of the Submariner.
So, it’s time to take a look at this new Submariner, for start, it is not a refurbished model, it’s a completely new watch, inside and outside. A new 41mm oytersteel case with thinner lugs, which is probably the biggest aesthetical improvement, an oyster bracelet slightly wider than the previous one, on the dial the hands look a little bigger (but we can’t guarantee for now) at the bottom, the Rolex coronet was inserted between the words “Swiss Made” and a ceramic Cerachrome bezel, the same as that introduced in ref. 116610. Inside, we have a new In-house movement Caliber 3230, with 70 hours of power reserve, a Chronergy escapement also from the brand that brings more efficiency and precision to the watch and as the previous models has the Superlative Chronometer certification.
Our final remarks on this quick review, and it should be noted here that we have not yet had the opportunity to have it in our hands, is a new welcome watch that replaces the 10 and 8-year-old models (ref. 116610 of 2010 and ref. 114060 of 2012), with a movement over 20 years. About the most controversial new size, let’s get the elephant out of the room, although the size has increased by 1mm, the slimming lugs give the case a more balanced shape, breaking with an almost square figure from the previous case, and being honest with mine eyes and observing side by side ref. 114060 and ref. 124060, it seems to me that this new Submariner dresses better on the wrist and in a size smaller than the previous 40mm, so, in my opinion, it is a no problem.
