Introducing the Omega Speedmaster 321 Canopus Gold
The new Speedmaster 321 Canopus Gold (white gold with Swiss watch brand signature) that Omega has just launched aims to celebrate 65 years of the iconic Speedmaster ref. CK2915, which marks the start of production of one of the brand’s most recognizable models, equipped from the inside with the no less famous Caliber 321, which equipped the Speedmaster’s at the service of astronauts on their expeditions to the Moon in the ’60s and which extended into more than 10 years.
Although this model is a faithful reconstruction of the model launched in 1957, it also adds a set of very interesting details that we will discuss later on. It is not a limited edition despite its significant price and probable rarity which time will take care to prove.
Starting with the case in Canopus Gold, 38.6mm in diameter, 13.29mm in thickness and 48mm in the lug-to-lug distance, thus featuring exactly the same dimensions as the historic Speedmaster CK2915. The bezel engraved with a tachymeter scale and filled with black “Grand Feu” enamel, is faithful to the original model and which, by the way, was the first watch to have a tachymeter on the bezel, also highlighting the precious detail of the famous dot over ninety (DON) and a dot diagonal to seventy. The chronograph is presented with sapphire glass on the front instead of the hesalite glass of the original and which also extends to the caseback where the iconic Omega Seahorse, used on the Speedmaster since 1957, is engraved with a sparkling blue sapphire eye engraved on the inside. Lastly, the crown should be highlighted, which, in addition to coming with the traditional symbol of the brand, adds the NAIAD symbol that was possible to find in some of the first CK2915 and which served to mark the water-resistance.
On the deep black onyx dial, the usual three-subdial setup, with the 30-minute counter at 3, the 12-hour counter at 6 and the small seconds at 9 o’clock. But what really stands out on the dial is the 18K white gold “Broad Arrow” hands which together with Canopus Gold treated indexes are filled with white lume. Another of the details to note is the applied vintage Omega logo in 18K white gold with an oval “O” that was also possible to find on the first CK2915.
Inside, as already mentioned, it operates the Caliber 321, reintroduced in 2017 as a second-generation on the occasion of the Speedmaster’s 60th anniversary, and which comes with a column-wheel chronograph, manual-wound and which offers up to 55 hours of power reserve.
Finally, the watch comes with the Canopus Gold bracelet which is very identical to the current Speedmaster Caliber 321 steel bracelet, tapered design and an easy-extension system on the clasp.
The watch is offered in a beautiful and elegant wooden case that adds a magnifying glass to the watch, for a retail price of €80,700.
