Introducing The Nivada Antarctic Diver Reissue
After the Second World War, the fever for diving watches began to awaken, sponsored by the growing demand for nautical sports and underwater exploration, and it was at this time that the iconic Rolex Submariner and the Blancpain Fifty-Fathoms appeared. At the end of the 1950s, Nivada also decided to enter the race for diving watches and presented the “Antarctic-Diver”, and today, more than half a century later, it introduces the reissue of its first diving watch.
The contemporary Nivada Antarctic Diver now comes slightly wider while maintaining very moderate dimensions. Thus, the new diving watch now comes in stainless steel case measuring 38mm in diameter, 12.9mm thick and 45mm lug-to-lug distance. Equipped with a unidirectional ceramic bezel, double-domed sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and case back, the latter is engraved with a pigeon profile in the central medallion followed by the brand and model name, and 200m of water resistance water.
On the black dial, we can find the “red cross hairs” faithful to the original model and that match the tone of the second’s hands tip, lip-stick hour markers and hands filled with patinaed luminescent material, a date window at 3 o’clock whose readability is improved by the crystal magnifier and the white inscriptions of the brand name followed by “Automatic” referring to the movement at 12 o’clock and the watch model at 6 o’clock that match the outer minute scale.
Inside, the Swiss Soprod P024 movement based on the ETA 2824-2 runs at 28,800 Vph and offers up to 38 hours of power reserve.
The watch is offered with a wide range of strap options, which include four types of leather straps, a rubber “Tropic” strap and five different steel bracelets, three of which are provided by the prestigious bracelet brand “Forstner”.
The watches will be available from May 25, 2023, exclusively on the brand’s website, with prices starting at €815.
Our Opinion
The return of the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Diver is yet another excellent piece of news in the wave of the revitalization of iconic watches and although we see many brands choose to carry out retouches that “spoil” the old beauty of these timepieces, we cannot fail to admire those who do everything to preserve them and the Antarctic Diver reissue is exactly what we saw, an effort to maintain all the splendour of the old lines.
The watch presents itself at a very competitive price, if we consider that it comes with sapphire glass with a magnifier, a ceramic bezel filled with luminescent material throughout the scale and that I almost forgot to mention, 38mm in diameter that hardly leaves out someone, automatic swiss movement and ten, yes that’s right, ten different strap options, including three different options of Forstner steel bracelets, which if you have a little more slack in your budget believe me it will be worth it.
I think that’s all said and done on our part and to finish with what should be obvious, of course, we liked the new Antarctic Diver.
