Introducing The New TAG Heuer Carrera Glassbox Chronograph In Gold
TAG Heuer announces the arrival of a new Carrera Chronograph in gold.
The latest chronograph is inspired by the previous ref. 1158 CHN from the early 70s created for Ferrari F1 drivers and not only, and which in addition to the gold case featured a dial in the same material and a bicompax layout that had two black counters and also a date window.
The new chronograph now arrives in a Glassbox case in 18K 3N Gold, whose composition includes 75% gold, plus 12.50% silver and 12.50% copper. It features a 39mm diameter, 13.90mm thickness and 46mm lug-to-lug distance, domed sapphire crystal, fluted crown flanked by two pump-style pushers, open case back and 100m of water resistance.
The dial, also in gold, features a vertical brushed finish with a tachymeter scale flange, a tricompax layout that to the previous black 30-minute and 12-hour counters at 3-9 o’clock now adds a ‘ghost’ running seconds at 6 o’clock that also houses a framed date window. Applied gold hour markers and hands filled with Super-LumiNova, and a chronograph centre seconds hand in black matching the brand’s lettering and logo printed at noon.
Inside, the expenses are covered by the Caliber TH20-00 automatic movement, which operates at 28,800 Vph and offers a robust 80 hours of power reserve.
The watch comes attached to a black rally-type leather strap with an 18k gold pin buckle and is expected to arrive in November at around CHF 21,000.
Our Opinion
The Glassbox platform gives the watch a more retro look, counterbalancing it with contemporary details, making the end result quite appealing. The inclusion of the black leather strap instead of a gold bracelet also seems to be a very intelligent solution, counteracting an ostentatious appearance and giving it an elegant aspect.
Although I have never been a fan of gold watches, I can say that my taste has been changing in recent years and today I no longer say that I will never acquire one, and this new TAG Heuer Carrera is a real temptation for those who appreciate chronographs on a higher level.
