Introducing the New Omega Speedmaster ‘Silver Snoopy Award’ 50th Anniversary
Omega yesterday launched a new Speedmaster, a commemorative version of the 50th anniversary of the “Silver Snoopy Award”, the day chosen was no accident, as it was precisely 50 years ago that day that the Silver Snoopy Award was given to the Omega of the Apollo 13 Crew. This was not the first commemorative version with Snoopy, having previously released two other versions, which we had the opportunity to talk about, for the anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission and which we leave the link here if you want to know more.
This was an awaited version with some expectation since the two previous versions came as limited editions arousing the interest of many fans and collectors, and here comes the first novelty, since this new Speedmaster comes as a non-limited edition, which is a controversial issue that continues to generate diverse opinions.
About the watch itself, which is what matters most, comes with a silver dial with deep accents in blue, however, the highlight of this watch is the caseback, where one animation was placed in which it is possible to see the Snoopy inside the capsule at your command and flying (through an invisible “magic” hand over some angles) over the earth during the famous 14 seconds, at a certain time the ship will disappear behind the moon, at the top of the animation comes the inscription “Eyes on the Stars”, this animation is triggered by the start pusher of the chronograph, the earth also rotates once a second together with the small hand of seconds, all this in a reconstitution of the Apollo 13 free return trajectory.
The blue accents on the Speedmaster are found on the ceramic bezel, in the three subdials, a seconds subdial at the 9 o’clock position with the Silver Snoopy Award as the background and above it the “50th Anniversary” signature, and with two counters of 12 hours and 30 minutes in the 6 and 3 o’clock positions part of the chronograph function. The three central hands and the second subdial hand also come in blue, as well as the hour indexes. The watch comes with a blue nylon bracelet, with some engravings on the inside referring to the Apollo 13 space mission.
Finally, the watch comes with a Caliber 3861 manual movement, used for the first time in the Apollo XI and is based on the Caliber 1861 and has a Master Chronograph Certification by Metas.
