Born in 1959 and reintroduced in 2007, the Longines Legend Diver originally came without a date window, but a year after being reincorporated a date window appeared on its dial and has remained that way to this day.
And today it is reborn in a new size of 39mm, filling the gap between the two existing sizes of 42 and 36mm, now coming without a date window returning to its roots.
The diving watch which maintains its entire exterior design, wears the same round stainless steel case with a polished finish but is now 39mm in diameter, 12.70mm in thickness and 47mm lug-to-lug distance. Sapphire crystal, two screw-down crowns one to regulate the time and another for the inner dive bezel, screwed solid case back engraved with a diver and the usual 300m watertightness.
The dial comes in two colour variants, in black or blue, with the traditional layout but now without a date window, where in addition to the inner bezel, we can find white applied hour markers and numerals and three central hands all filled with Super-LumiNova in two tones – green and blue, and which also make the inverted triangle that marks 12 o’clock on the bezel glow in the dark.
Inside, the automatic movement Caliber 888.6 keeps running, which now is COSC chronometer-certified, operating at 25,200 Vph and offering up to 3 days of power reserve.
Both colours can come attached to a beads-of-rice steel bracelet, or with a brown leather strap for the black version and a Nato-type textile strap for the blue version, with prices ranging from €3,650 for the steel and leather options and €3,400 for the Nato strap option.
As it should no longer be a secret to anyone, we love simple and uncomplicated dials, so the banishment of the date window on the Longines Legend Diver sounds like music to our ears. The same applies to the size, although there was already a smaller 36mm option, we believe that the new 39mm size will be more friendly to those who think that 42 is too wide and 36 too small.
Our only observation is the price, as compared to the two previous models with the options of a leather strap or a steel mesh bracelet, whose prices remain at €2,850, the new 39mm size arrives almost 30% more expensive, remaining It is up to everyone to judge whether the new chronometer certification is worth the extra price charged.
