In 1986 the film ‘Top Gun’ debuted in theatres, where Tom Cruise dressed as Maverick, a talented fighter pilot from the US Navy who had just joined the ‘Top Gun’ the Naval Fighter Weapons School for elite pilots in Miramar. I remember being one of my favourite films and seeing it over and over again. Today and more than 30 years later, the sequel to the film, ‘Top Gun 2’, is being prepared to debut in cinemas, which I am looking forward to with some curiosity. But today it is not about movies that I come to talk about, but about the launch of a new IWC watch and as you may have noticed within its pilot watch line, the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “SFTI”, we remind you that IWC pays tribute to the TOP GUN school since 2007 with the launch of numerous watch models and if you are wondering now which watch did Maverick wear in 1986 in the film, we can assure you it was not an IWC TOP GUN, but a 3H Porsche Design, with the same tactical aspect as the IWC TOP GUN, we can only wait to see what will be on his wrist in the sequel to the film.
But let’s take a look at the watch itself, in 2018 IWC created a special edition exclusively for TOPGUN school graduates and called “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor” which left many fans of the brand watering their mouth without being able to enjoy the exclusive model and for this today the brand launches a similar model limited to 1,500 units, the watch features a 44mm black ceramic case and a Ceratanium caseback just like the pushers and crown, with a matte black dial which gives it a totally tactical look. On the dial we can find a black dial with luminescence and big Arabic hours markers, we can also find the traditional 12 o’clock mark represented by the triangle between the two dots, 12 hours and 30 minutes totalizers at 9 and 12 o’clock positions part of the chronograph function, a seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock position with a red hand and a day-date window at 3 o’clock. Regarding the central hands, they come with luminescence and, in addition, the chronograph second hand has an interesting detail, a jet fighter in red on the tail.
Inside the watch features an In-house automatic movement 69380 Caliber, with an inner iron-case for protection against magnetic fields, an anti-reflective glass coating in both sides and secured against displacement by drop in air pressure, with 46 hours of power reserve and 60 meters of water resistance.
To conclude, we leave the suggestion for all those who are fans of aviation or of the films of the ’80s to see or review the original TOP GUN film of 1986, as they will certainly spend a few good hours watching one of the Blockbuster of the time.
