Into The Dunes: Land Rover’s Rugged New Defender D7X-R
Land Rover has introduced the Defender Dakar D7X-R, a purpose-built evolution of the Defender platform engineered specifically for the demands of the 2026 Dakar Rally. Developed within FIA regulatory guidelines, this competition-spec model transforms the already robust Defender OCTA architecture into a machine optimized for multi-day endurance racing across unforgiving desert terrain.

Racing Architecture and Powertrain
At the core of the D7X-R is the same 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 found in the Defender OCTA. While Land Rover has not released the official output figures for the rally version, the standard model produces 635 hp and 750 Nm, suggesting that the competition engine has been calibrated for even greater sustained performance. Power is delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission that incorporates rally-specific gear ratios engineered to maximize acceleration and maintain traction across shifting sand, rock, and dune environments. A defining element of the rally build is a custom 550-litre long-range fuel tank, developed to support extended competitive stages and filled with advanced sustainable fuel designed for the Dakar program.

Chassis, Geometry, and Off-Road Engineering
The D7X-R keeps the familiar Defender 110 silhouette but receives extensive structural upgrades for rally endurance. Its wider stance improves stability at high speeds, while the suspension has been raised to give the vehicle far more clearance over rough terrain. Approach and departure angles are reworked for steep dunes and sharp crests, and a competition-grade braking system ensures consistent stopping power during long, punishing stages.

Exterior: The ‘Geopalette’ Competition Livery
For its debut season, the Defender Dakar D7X-R receives a distinctive ‘Geopalette’ livery, a visual scheme inspired by desert topography. The design blends sand, earth, and mineral tones with subtle aqua highlights, a nod to the rare water sources found in arid environments. This approach delivers a functional and visually striking identity tailored to the rally atmosphere.

Driver Lineup and Support Team
Land Rover will field three Defender Dakar D7X-R entries in the 2026 Dakar Rally. The first car will be driven by Stéphane Peterhansel with Mika Metge as co-driver, while the second will be piloted by Rokas Baciuška alongside Oriol Vidal, and the third by Sara Price with Sean Berriman supporting. All crews will operate under the leadership of newly appointed Team Principal Ian James, supported by a specialized group of engineers and technicians responsible for managing the technical demands of long-distance rally competition.

Rally-Ready Interior and On-Board Equipment
Inside, the D7X-R adopts a fully functional competition layout. A motorsport-grade roll cage reinforces the cabin, and the rear seating area has been reconfigured to secure three spare wheels essential for rapid roadside repairs during stages. Equipment such as tools, compressed air systems, and key spare components is positioned for quick accessibility. The vehicle also integrates dual hydraulic jacks, allowing the team to lift either side of the Defender in moments.
