Innovation In Motion: The UR-Freak By Ulysse Nardin And Urwerk
For the first time, Ulysse Nardin and Urwerk have joined forces, and the result is a remarkable showcase of mechanical creativity: the UR-Freak. This limited-edition model combines two of the most distinctive design philosophies in contemporary independent watchmaking, blending Ulysse Nardin’s legendary Freak architecture with Urwerk’s signature wandering-hour satellite display.

A Dial Where Two Worlds Meet
The centerpiece of the UR-Freak is a dial that captures the unconventional spirit of both brands. Dominating the display is an enlarged silicon oscillator—25% larger than the standard Freak design—reflecting Ulysse Nardin’s ongoing mastery of silicon technology. This oscillator sits beneath Urwerk’s iconic satellite hour system, which rotates along a three-hour carousel. The result is a dynamic, ever-moving visual experience that stays true to the kinetic nature of both the Freak concept and Urwerk’s approach to time indication.

The architecture is deliberately open, revealing the motion and mechanical choreography that defines the watch. It’s less a traditional dial and more a stage for the movement itself.
A Case That Reflects Both Identities
Measuring 44 mm, the case is crafted from sandblasted titanium, keeping the weight low while giving the watch a futuristic aesthetic. The bezel incorporates fluted elements inspired by Urwerk’s industrial design language, subtly merging with Ulysse Nardin’s own sculptural forms.

As with all Freak models, the UR-Freak is crownless. Time-setting is performed via the rotating bezel, which is locked in place by a device at six o’clock engraved with the UR-Freak signature. This continues Ulysse Nardin’s tradition of integrating movement control directly into the case.
Inside the UR-Freak: The UN-241 Calibre
Powering the UR-Freak is Ulysse Nardin’s in-house calibre UN-241, created specifically for this collaboration. The movement combines Freak-style architecture with Urwerk’s orbital display system in a mechanically cohesive design. Its oscillator beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), offering a balance of precision and visual dynamism. A single mainspring barrel delivers an impressive 90-hour power reserve, giving the watch a long-lasting energy supply even when not worn daily.

To keep the movement energized, Ulysse Nardin equips the UR-Freak with its highly efficient Grinder automatic winding system, capable of capturing even minimal wrist movement. For enthusiasts who enjoy interacting directly with the mechanics, the watch can also be manually wound by rotating the caseback.
Straps, Availability, and Price
The UR-Freak is available with two distinct strap configurations. One is a ballistic-textured yellow rubber strap that emphasizes the watch’s bold character, while the other is a black integrated rubber strap that offers a more understated, streamlined appearance. Both are paired with a titanium deployant clasp that matches the lightweight construction of the case.

Production of the UR-Freak is limited to 100 pieces worldwide, and the watch is priced at CHF 100,000 excluding taxes.
A Collaboration That Expands Creative Boundaries
This collaboration marks a significant moment in modern independent watchmaking. Ulysse Nardin’s longstanding reputation for material innovation and movement experimentation merges naturally with Urwerk’s unconventional approach to displaying time. The UR-Freak demonstrates what can emerge when two forward-thinking brands push their creativity in new directions.
Given the adaptability of the Freak platform and the imaginative nature of Urwerk’s complications, this first collaboration opens the door to exciting possibilities. If this model is any indication, the partnership between these two independent powerhouses has considerable potential for future explorations.
