Hanhart Square By Square: A Bold Geometric Concept Limited To Just Six Pieces
Hanhart is best known for its pilot’s chronographs and robust tool watches, but the German brand is now exploring a very different design language with the new Square by Square. Created as an experimental concept, the watch combines an unconventional case architecture with sculptural surfaces, resulting in one of the most distinctive timepieces the company has produced in recent years.

The project was developed in collaboration with Munich-based designer Marcus Wiedemann, who has previously worked with Hanhart. The design first appeared as an entry in the Dubai Watch Week x Grail Watch Design Competition, where it was selected as a finalist in the category dedicated to innovative shaped watch designs. While inspired by historical shaped watches found in Hanhart’s archives, the Square by Square is an entirely new creation rather than a reinterpretation of an existing model.
A Square Case Viewed from a Different Angle
The defining feature of the Square by Square is its unusual case. Although fundamentally square, it is rotated 45 degrees so it sits on the wrist like a diamond, creating a striking visual identity.

The design draws inspiration from complex geometric forms, with curved surfaces that appear to bend both inward and outward simultaneously. This interplay continues across the entire watch, from the flowing case profile to the dial and crystal, creating an optical effect that changes depending on the viewing angle.
One of the most technically demanding elements is the domed sapphire crystal, which extends seamlessly to the case edges. According to Hanhart, developing the crystal required multiple prototypes before achieving the desired shape and optical distortion.
Two Distinctive Blue Dial Options
The Square by Square is available in two different executions, both sharing a deep blue colour scheme and an Art Deco-inspired stepped chapter ring featuring custom numerals designed to echo the geometry of the case.

The first version features a classic sunburst blue dial paired with a matte-finished stainless steel case, while the second adopts a striking mosaic mother-of-pearl dial complemented by a polished case finish. Both retain the same architectural design language while offering distinctly different personalities.
Compact Dimensions and Automatic Movement
Despite its unconventional shape, the watch remains relatively compact. The case measures 40 mm from 12 to 6 o’clock, 38 mm across, with a surprisingly short 32.80 mm lug-to-lug distance and a thickness of 10.90 mm.

Inside is the Sellita SW1000 automatic movement, delivering a 46-hour power reserve, while the stainless steel case offers 100 metres of water resistance, ensuring the watch is more than capable of everyday wear despite its concept-driven appearance.
An Ultra-Limited Concept
Rather than being a regular production model, the Square by Square is being released as a highly exclusive prototype series. Hanhart will produce only six examples in total—three of each dial variant—and has yet to decide whether the design will eventually evolve into a full production collection.

The Hanhart Square by Square is priced at € 1,588 plus VAT, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire one of the brand’s most experimental and uncommon creations to date.
