Greubel Forsey Raises The Bar For Hand Finishing With The New Balancier QM

With the launch of the Balancier QM, Greubel Forsey unveils not only a new limited-production timepiece but also the debut of its Qualité Musée finishing standard, a level of hand decoration applied to every component of the movement regardless of visibility.cwith one of the manufacture’s most wearable case sizes and a dial layout that places mechanical architecture at the centre of the display.

A Three-Dimensional Openworked Display

The dial side of the Balancier QM immediately showcases the design language that has become synonymous with Greubel Forsey. Rather than relying on a traditional dial, the watch presents a multi-level architectural display where each indication occupies its own dedicated space.

Hours and minutes are displayed on an offset sub-dial positioned in the upper right section of the watch. The display remains surprisingly easy to read thanks to its contrasting chapter ring and blued hands, which also create a visual connection with the blue rubber strap.

Beneath the time display sits the 72-hour power reserve indicator, integrated into the movement architecture rather than appearing as a separate complication. Its elongated scale follows the contours of the calibre and contributes to the watch’s layered appearance.

The small seconds display is positioned between seven and eight o’clock, balancing the composition while maintaining excellent legibility.

Dominating the entire dial is the oversized balance wheel, suspended above the movement and fully exposed to view. Its prominent placement transforms one of the movement’s functional components into the visual focal point of the watch, reinforcing the dynamic character of the display as the balance oscillates continuously during operation.

The extensive use of openworked elements allows light to travel through the movement, highlighting the different textures, finishes and materials used throughout the construction.

Precious Materials and Hand Finishing

The Balancier QM introduces Greubel Forsey’s new Qualité Musée standard, developed by the manufacture’s Experimental Watch Technology laboratory.

Under this specification, all 298 components of the manually wound Calibre GF09CM receive hand finishing, including elements that remain hidden once the movement is assembled.

Traditional techniques such as black polishing, hand-executed anglage, straight graining, circular graining and polished countersinks are used extensively throughout the movement.

The calibre itself makes use of rhodium-plated gold and nickel silver components, while details such as convex jewels and hand-finished wheel sinks further contribute to the visual richness of both the dial and movement sides of the watch.

The GF09CM Calibre

Powering the Balancier QM is the in-house manually wound Calibre GF09CM.

Operating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour, the movement delivers a power reserve of 72 hours supplied by two fast-rotating barrels mounted coaxially and connected in series. One of the barrels incorporates a slipping spring system designed to prevent excessive tension during winding.

Greubel Forsey also produces several key regulating components in-house, including its hairsprings and escapement components, reflecting the manufacture’s extensive vertical integration.

Compact Dimensions in White Gold

The Balancier QM is housed in an 18k white gold case measuring 39.60 mm in diameter and 12.25 mm thick, dimensions that make it one of the more restrained offerings in the Greubel Forsey collection.

Sapphire crystals on both sides provide uninterrupted views of the movement and dial architecture, while water resistance is rated to 30 metres.

The watch is paired with a hand-sewn blue rubber strap fitted with an 18k white gold pin buckle.

Limited to 33 Pieces

Production of the Greubel Forsey Balancier QM will be limited to 33 examples worldwide, with pricing available upon request through the brand.

By combining a highly architectural display with a new level of hand finishing applied throughout the calibre, the Balancier QM represents both a technical showcase and an evolution of the manufacture’s approach to traditional decorative craftsmanship.
