Grand Seiko SLGB001 & SLGB003: Introducing The Most Accurate Spring Drive Ever
With the debut of the SLGB001 and SLGB003, Grand Seiko introduces a technical milestone in the evolution of Spring Drive technology. These two references are the first to feature the newly developed Caliber 9RB2 U.F.A. (Ultra Fine Adjustment) movement, a result of decades of research and refinement that now sets a new global standard for accuracy in timepieces powered by a mainspring.
Ultra Fine Adjustment: The Caliber 9RB2 U.F.A.
At the heart of both SLGB001 and SLGB003 lies the Caliber 9RB2 U.F.A., distinguished by an accuracy rating of ±20 seconds per year. This represents the highest level of precision ever achieved by a Spring Drive movement. The movement builds upon Grand Seiko’s legacy of hybrid mechanical-quartz technology by integrating a tri-synchro regulator with a newly developed aged quartz oscillator, thermo-compensated integrated circuit, and vacuum-sealed environment that ensures stable performance over time.

The caliber measures 30mm in diameter and has a thickness of just 5.02mm. It delivers a power reserve of 72 hours and features a power reserve indicator, visible through the skeletonized rotor on the back of the movement. For the first time in Spring Drive history, this movement is also equipped with a regulation switch that can be used during after-sales servicing to fine-tune accuracy.
This new regulation switch marks a first for Spring Drive movements, allowing watchmakers to fine-tune the accuracy post-production—an important leap forward in long-term servicing and maintenance.
Advanced Thermo-Compensation and Oscillator Treatment
The oscillator inside the 9RB2 U.F.A. is subjected to a three-month aging process, ensuring long-term frequency stability. In combination with the individually programmed integrated circuit and a thermo-compensation mechanism calibrated for each movement, the 9RB2 U.F.A. maintains its extraordinary precision across a wide range of environmental conditions. Vacuum sealing protects critical components from static, humidity, and light interference.

Case and Construction
The SLGB003 (titanium) and SLGB001 (platinum) both measure 37mm in diameter and 11.4mm in thickness, offering a compact profile with 100 meters of water resistance. This is a deliberate move by Grand Seiko to demonstrate the feasibility of engineering a high-performance movement in a smaller, more wearable case size.

Both models feature a screw-down crown and sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
SLGB001: Platinum 950 case, limited to 80 pieces, features a light blue dial.
SLGB003: High-Intensity Titanium case with a white frost-textured dial.

Micro-Adjust Clasp Innovation
The SLGB003 introduces Grand Seiko’s first micro-adjustable clasp system, a significant upgrade in user experience. The new three-step system offers 6mm of on-the-fly adjustment, using a pressure-release mechanism within the clasp. While its function is in line with industry norms, its integration into Grand Seiko’s high-intensity titanium bracelet marks a crucial step forward for comfort and fit.
It should be noted that this clasp innovation is currently limited to new models and will not be retrofitted to existing references such as the Snowflake or White Birch.
Design Language
The dials of both watches continue Grand Seiko’s tradition of incorporating nature-inspired textures. The SLGB003 features a frost-like pattern, referencing winter landscapes around the Shinshu Studio, while the SLGB001 pairs its platinum case with an icy blue tone. Both utilize Grand Seiko’s hallmark Zaratsu polishing and multi-faceted hour markers to achieve light play across the dial.

Implications for Future Collections
While the SLGB001 and SLGB003 are standouts in their own right, the technological advancements they introduce—especially the U.F.A. movement and micro-adjust system—signal broader applications across Grand Seiko’s collections. The prospect of future divers or sports models with reduced dimensions, enhanced comfort, and ultra-high accuracy is now a realistic expectation.
