Grand Seiko Refreshes The Evolution 9 Collection With U.F.A Spring Drive And Technical Enhancements

For the summer of 2026, Grand Seiko has introduced a significant update to its Evolution 9 collection, applying the Japanese philosophy of Kodawari — a dedication to continuous refinement and perfection through attention to detail.

The refresh affects nine references across both the Spring Drive and Hi-Beat families, bringing new movements, improved materials, upgraded bracelets, and a more unified design language throughout the collection. Two new dial executions also join the lineup.

Evolution 9 Spring Drive Receives The New 9RB2 U.F.A. Movement

The most important technical development arrives on the Spring Drive side of the collection, where all three-hand Evolution 9 Spring Drive models now adopt the new Calibre 9RB2 U.F.A.

Short for Ultra Fine Accuracy, the movement delivers an impressive annual precision rating of ±20 seconds per year, making it the most accurate mainspring-powered wristwatch movement currently in production.

Like all Spring Drive calibres, the 9RB2 combines a traditional mechanical gear train and mainspring with an electronic quartz regulator, creating Grand Seiko’s distinctive hybrid technology that offers the smooth glide motion of the seconds hand together with quartz-level accuracy.

Five references now feature the new movement, including the updated SLGB009 White Birch, SLGB011 Atera Valley and SLGB013 Lake Suwa, all of which evolve existing members of the Evolution 9 collection. Joining them are the new SLGB015 Lake Suwa and the SLGB007 Night Lake.

The SLGB015 is particularly noteworthy as it introduces a more compact case measuring 37mm in diameter and 11.4mm thick, providing collectors with a smaller alternative within the Spring Drive lineup while retaining the same movement and overall design language of the larger models.

New Night Lake Dial Debuts

Among the novelties is the introduction of the SLGB007 Night Lake.

The new model adopts the familiar textured dial pattern inspired by the surface of Lake Suwa, but replaces the traditional blue tones with a dark fumé finish that transitions from black at the edges to warm brown hues towards the centre.

Unlike the steel versions in the collection, the Night Lake retains a high-intensity titanium case, creating a darker overall appearance that complements the dial colour.

Box-Shaped Sapphire Crystal Across The Entire Collection

Another important update concerns the crystal design.

Previous Evolution 9 Spring Drive references used dual-curved sapphire crystals, while the Hi-Beat models featured box-shaped sapphire crystals. Grand Seiko has now standardized this element throughout the collection, with all Evolution 9 references adopting the box-shaped sapphire crystal design.

The change applies to the updated White Birch, Atera Valley and Lake Suwa Spring Drive models.

Ever-Brilliant Steel Replaces Conventional Stainless Steel

Grand Seiko has also revised the case materials used throughout the Evolution 9 lineup.

All references previously manufactured in stainless steel now transition to the brand’s proprietary Ever-Brilliant Steel alloy, which offers enhanced corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steel while maintaining a brighter appearance over time.

The material upgrade affects both Spring Drive and Hi-Beat models and further aligns the collection with Grand Seiko’s latest manufacturing standards.

Titanium remains reserved for the darker “Night” editions, including the Night Lake Spring Drive and Night Birch Hi-Beat references.

Micro-Adjust Clasp Introduced Across Evolution 9

A new bracelet clasp featuring an integrated micro-adjustment mechanism has been introduced across the entire Evolution 9 collection.

The system allows wearers to fine-tune bracelet length without tools, improving comfort and allowing quick adjustments as wrist size changes throughout the day or in warmer climates.

This enhancement is shared by every updated reference regardless of movement type.

Hi-Beat Models Receive Material And Bracelet Upgrades

The Hi-Beat side of the collection receives more subtle revisions, with the Calibre 9SA5 remaining unchanged.

Among the updated references are the SLGH031 White Birch and SLGH033 Green Birch, both of which now benefit from the use of Ever-Brilliant Steel in place of conventional stainless steel. The same material update also extends to the newly introduced Genbi Valley model, further standardising the Evolution 9 range.

Meanwhile, the SLGH029 Night Birch continues to be produced in titanium and retains the darker aesthetic that distinguishes the “Night” models within the collection. Aside from the addition of the new micro-adjustment clasp, the watch remains largely unchanged from the previous generation.

Genbi Valley Dial Returns As A Regular Production Model

Completing the updated Hi-Beat lineup is the return of the Genbi Valley dial pattern.

Inspired by the scenery surrounding the Genbi Gorge and its river in northern Japan, the textured dial captures the visual characteristics of flowing water, rocky landscapes and surrounding vegetation.

While the motif previously appeared on a limited edition released in 2024, the new Evolution 9 interpretation becomes part of the permanent collection and adopts a bluer dial tone than the earlier green execution.

The arrival of the Calibre 9RB2 U.F.A. also establishes a new benchmark for Spring Drive precision, while the introduction of Ever-Brilliant Steel and the micro-adjust clasp modernises the ownership experience across the range.

With these updates, Grand Seiko continues to refine one of its most technically advanced and recognizable collections while maintaining the nature-inspired aesthetics that define the Evolution 9 series.
