Grand Seiko Introduces The SBGY043 With Deep Indigo “Iwao” Dial

Grand Seiko expands its Elegance Collection with the introduction of the new SBGY043, a refined dress watch that combines one of the brand’s most admired dial textures with a rich indigo-blue finish inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The latest reference showcases Grand Seiko’s celebrated “Iwao” dial pattern, a textured surface inspired by rugged rock formations and mountain landscapes. This motif has become highly recognizable among collectors, and on the SBGY043 it appears in a striking deep indigo tone influenced by katsuiro, the historic Japanese dyeing technique known for its intense blue shades.

The darker execution gives the dial a distinctly sophisticated character. Depending on the light, the textured pattern reveals itself gradually, creating a dynamic visual effect that contrasts beautifully with the sharply polished hands and applied hour markers. Grand Seiko’s renowned Zaratsu finishing ensures that every facet catches the light with exceptional clarity.

The SBGY043 is housed in Grand Seiko’s elegant cushion-shaped case, a design language well established within the brand’s dress-oriented offerings.

Crafted in stainless steel, the case measures 38.50 mm in diameter, with a slim 10.20 mm thickness and a compact 43.70 mm lug-to-lug length. These dimensions give the watch a refined wrist presence, balancing classic elegance with contemporary wearability.

Powering the watch is the manual-winding Spring Drive caliber 9R31, visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback.

This in-house movement delivers the signature smooth, gliding seconds hand motion that has become synonymous with Grand Seiko’s Spring Drive technology. The caliber offers a 72-hour power reserve and delivers an impressive accuracy rating of ±1 second per day.

A particularly appealing detail is the clean dial layout, made possible by relocating the power reserve display to the movement side. This allows the front of the watch to remain completely symmetrical and uncluttered, with no date window or reserve indicator interrupting the textured surface.
