Swiss watchmaker Frederique Constant continues its long-standing partnership with the Riva Historical Society with the launch of the new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT, a travel-inspired timepiece that pays tribute to the iconic Italian Riva boats. Following the introduction of the three-hand Classics Runabout Automatic Blue in 2024, the latest edition adds a practical GMT complication and arrives in two distinct dial colours: blue and teak brown.

Inspired by the Elegance of Riva Boats

The Classics Runabout collection celebrates the timeless charm of Riva’s luxury wooden speedboats, renowned for their elegant design and craftsmanship. This nautical inspiration is clearly reflected on the watch’s dial, where the central section features vertical stripes reminiscent of the teak decking found on classic Riva runabouts.

The teak brown model offers the closest visual connection to the wooden boats, while the blue version evokes the colours of the sea and Mediterranean lifestyle that have become synonymous with the Riva name.

A Refined 42mm Stainless Steel Case

The new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT comes housed in a polished stainless steel case measuring 42 mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.85 mm. The design remains faithful to the clean and classic aesthetic of previous Runabout editions, featuring a slim polished bezel and elegantly curved lugs that reinforce its sophisticated appearance.

Despite its maritime inspiration, the watch is designed more as a refined everyday companion than a sports watch, offering 50 metres of water resistance, enough for daily use and occasional exposure to water while preserving its dress-oriented character.

Dual Time Zone Functionality

The main addition to this latest release is the GMT complication, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone — an especially useful feature for frequent travellers.

The dial architecture is built around a central textured section inspired by the wooden decks of classic Riva boats. Surrounding it is a 24-hour scale used in conjunction with the GMT hand to display a second time zone, while the outer hour track combines Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9 o’clock with applied baton indexes for a balanced and highly legible display. A date aperture sits neatly at 6 o’clock and a minute track positioned on the flange completes the layout.

Despite the amount of information displayed, the dial remains clean, symmetrical and easy to read.

Powered by the FC-350 Automatic Movement

Driving the watch is the Frederique Constant Calibre FC-350, an automatic movement based on a Sellita architecture and enhanced with the brand’s GMT module. The movement combines reliable timekeeping with the convenience of a second time zone indication, making the watch particularly appealing to travellers and business professionals.

The addition of the GMT mechanism results in a slightly thicker profile compared to the previous three-hand Runabout models, although the increase in dimensions remains well proportioned within the elegant 42mm case.

Limited to 888 Pieces

Both the blue and teak brown versions of the Frederique Constant Classics Runabout Automatic GMT are produced in limited editions of 888 pieces each, continuing the tradition of exclusive Runabout releases that appear every two years and celebrate the enduring relationship between Frederique Constant and the Riva Historical Society.

The watch is delivered on a strap matching the dial colour and is priced at € 2,095, positioning it as an attractive option for collectors looking for a Swiss-made GMT with distinctive nautical inspiration and limited-edition appeal.

Combining elegant styling with practical travel functionality, the new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT adds another chapter to one of Frederique Constant’s most distinctive collaborative collections, bringing together Swiss watchmaking and the timeless charm of classic Italian speedboats.

Our Take

While we appreciate the design and overall execution of the new Classics Runabout Automatic GMT, we cannot help but feel there is a certain disconnect between the watch’s intended purpose and some of its specifications.

Its 42 mm case diameter places it closer to the territory of modern sports watches, yet the modest 50 metres of water resistance suggests a far more conservative approach. Considering the collection draws its inspiration from the world of classic Riva runabouts and life at sea, a watch conceived to spend its days on the deck of a boat feels somewhat underserved by such limited water resistance.

If the intention was instead to position the watch primarily as an elegant dress piece, which would be more consistent with a 50m rating, then the 42 mm case arguably feels larger than necessary for that role.

Another curious choice is the 21 mm lug width. While not uncommon, it inevitably limits owners to a much smaller selection of aftermarket straps compared to the far more versatile and widely available 20 mm standard. Given the strap-changing culture that surrounds enthusiast watches today, this is a decision that is difficult to fully understand.
