Formex Essence 39mm Automatic COSC: The Compact Classic Gets Better

Formex is updating one of its most recognisable models with the new Essence 39 mm Automatic COSC, introducing a series of technical and ergonomic improvements while retaining the distinctive architecture that has defined the collection since the smaller 39 mm version was introduced in 2020.

The new model combines a 39 mm stainless-steel case with a newly specified COSC-certified movement, a screw-down crown and an improved bracelet clasp.

Compact Stainless-Steel Case

The Essence 39 retains its familiar stainless-steel case, measuring 39 mm in diameter, 10.5o mm in thickness, and 45.50 mm from lug to lug. Its proportions make it a versatile option for those looking for a contemporary mechanical watch without the dimensions associated with larger sports watches.

The case combines brushed surfaces with polished bevels and retains the four screws positioned at its corners. Another defining feature is Formex’s patented Case Suspension System, which uses a titanium inner container to create a degree of vertical movement between the movement assembly and the outer case.

For the new generation, Formex has integrated a screw-down crown into this architecture without altering the overall case profile. The change contributes to the watch’s practical credentials while maintaining its 100-metre water resistance.

Three Distinctive Dial Options

The Essence 39 Automatic COSC launches with three dial colours, each retaining the characteristic horizontal grooves that have become one of the model’s visual signatures. These grooves are individually CNC-milled into the dial, creating a structured surface that interacts with the light.

The familiar Blue version returns to the collection, while Alpine White combines its lighter dial with blued hands and indexes for additional contrast. Completing the initial selection is Radiant Bronze, a warmer colour previously used by Formex on the Reef collection.

Applied hour markers and faceted hands reinforce the three-dimensional appearance of the dial, while a colour-matched date wheel is positioned at 6 o’clock. Both the hands and indexes feature Super-LumiNova BGW9, providing blue luminescence in low-light conditions.

Sellita SW200-2 Power+ COSC

One of the most significant changes is hidden beneath the dial.

Formex replaces the previous Sellita SW200-1 with the newer SW200-2 Power+ COSC, bringing a substantial increase in autonomy. The movement operates at the familiar 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) but now offers approximately 65 hours of power reserve, compared with around 42 hours previously.

Beyond the longer running time, the new calibre incorporates improvements to its winding efficiency, shock resistance and regulating system. As indicated by the name, the movement is also COSC-certified, adding an independently tested level of chronometric performance to the watch.

The increased power reserve is particularly useful in everyday ownership, allowing the watch to remain running through a longer period away from the wrist before requiring it to be reset and wound.

A More Adjustable Bracelet

Formex has also revised the stainless-steel bracelet in collaboration with Dexel, focusing on adjustment without the need for tools.

The new butterfly clasp incorporates a tool-free adjustment mechanism that can be operated directly on the wrist. It provides adjustment in 3 mm increments, with up to 6 mm of additional length available.

This is a practical upgrade for a watch intended for daily wear, particularly as wrist dimensions naturally change throughout the day due to temperature and activity.

The Essence 39 Automatic COSC is also available with a selection of leather, nylon and rubber straps. Depending on the configuration, strap colours include black, blue, brown, green and red, providing considerably different combinations with the three dial options.

Availability and Price

Orders for the new Formex Essence 39mm Automatic COSC open today – August 27, 2026, with deliveries scheduled to begin in October 2026.

Pricing starts at € 1,680 on a strap, while the stainless-steel bracelet version starts at € 1,790.

With the same compact case architecture but meaningful changes to the movement, crown and bracelet, the new Essence 39 represents an evolution rather than a redesign. The combination of a 65-hour COSC-certified movement, screw-down crown and improved clasp gives the model a stronger technical specification while preserving the design language that has defined the Essence collection.
