Formex AirField: A Lightweight 40mm Field Watch Takes Flight
Formex expands its field-watch collection with the new AirField, a 40mm titanium automatic watch that combines the practical foundations of the Field Automatic Gen 2 with an aviation-inspired dial and an upgraded movement. Designed around legibility, lightness and everyday usability, the AirField also introduces a 65-hour power reserve while keeping its price within reach of a broad audience.

The new model builds on the platform introduced with the second-generation Field Automatic in 2025. While the original Field Automatic arrived in a 41mm titanium case in 2022, the Gen 2 reduced the diameter to 40mm and refined the overall proportions. The AirField retains those dimensions while giving the watch a distinctly aviation-oriented identity.
A lightweight titanium case
The AirField is housed in a 40 mm Grade 2 titanium case measuring 10.50 mm in thickness, with a 48 mm lug-to-lug distance. The combination of short lugs and relatively compact dimensions is intended to keep the watch comfortable on the wrist, while titanium contributes significantly to its low weight.
Without the strap, the watch weighs just 54 grams.

Formex applies a hardening treatment to the titanium, increasing the surface hardness to approximately 900 Vickers and providing additional resistance to everyday scratches. The case is topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, while a screw-down crown contributes to the watch’s 150-metre water resistance.
Turning the watch over reveals a hardened titanium caseback decorated with a radial aircraft-engine-inspired motif, reinforcing the aviation theme without adding unnecessary visual complexity.
An aviation instrument-inspired dial
The most distinctive change from the Field Automatic Gen 2 is found on the dial. Formex looked to the instruments found in aircraft cockpits for the AirField’s display, resulting in a design centred on immediate legibility.
The finely grained dial is stamped and features a sloped chapter ring that rises towards the sapphire crystal. Recessed stencil-style Arabic numerals and hour markers provide a utilitarian appearance, while Super-LumiNova ensures that the indications remain visible in low-light conditions.

At 12 o’clock, the traditional triangle flanked by two dots provides a clear orientation reference, a familiar feature in aviation-inspired watches.
The hour and minute hands are broad, sandblasted and sword-shaped, allowing them to stand out clearly against the dial. The seconds hand is considerably slimmer and features an aircraft-shaped counterweight, adding one of the more playful details to an otherwise highly functional display.
Formex retains its characteristic date aperture at 6 o’clock, positioned symmetrically within the dial and framed by a bevelled window.
Four dial colours are available: Desert Sand, Horizon Blue, Jet Black and Tarmac Grey. Each version is paired with a matching date disc for a more integrated appearance. The Desert Sand model uses blacked-out lume, while the remaining three variants use BGW9 Super-LumiNova.
The SW200-2 Power+ movement
Inside the AirField, Formex has made an important mechanical upgrade compared with the Field Automatic Gen 2.
Instead of the Sellita SW200-1 used previously, the AirField is powered by the newer Sellita SW200-2 Power+. The movement retains the familiar architecture of an ETA 2824 alternative but increases the power reserve from 41 hours to 65 hours.

Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and equipped with 26 jewels, the automatic calibre provides hours, minutes, central seconds and a date display.
The additional power reserve is particularly useful for an everyday watch, giving the AirField the ability to remain running for almost three days when fully wound.
Straps and quick adjustment
Formex offers the AirField with lightweight elastic nylon Velcro straps in black, blue, khaki green and sand, reinforcing the watch’s utilitarian character.

For a more traditional appearance, leather straps are also available in several colours. These can be paired with Formex’s carbon-fibre composite deployant clasp, which incorporates 7 mm of gradual fine adjustment.
Regardless of the chosen configuration, Formex equips the straps with its Quick Release system, allowing them to be changed without tools.
Price and availability
The Formex AirField 40mm Automatic is now available for pre-order, with deliveries scheduled to begin at the end of October.
Prices start at € 950 with a nylon strap. The leather strap configuration combined with the carbon-fibre composite deployant clasp is priced at € 1,075.
