Forged In Frost: The Return Of The Antarctic Glacier Vintage
In a world where most watches tell time, only a few whisper of survival. The Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Glacier Vintage storms into 2025 with the force of a legend reborn, carrying the memory of men who pushed into a continent of ice armed with little more than grit and a steel instrument on the wrist. This release feels less like a revival and more like a challenge, a reminder that true explorers do not wait for perfect conditions. They step into the cold anyway.
A Heritage Explorer Design
The Antarctic Glacier traces its roots to the original Antarctic line, a watch worn by scientific teams stationed in Antarctica during the 1950s. The new Vintage model follows the familiar layout of the classic explorer’s watch while integrating details drawn from a later era.

The watch keeps the beveled dauphine hands with lume inlays that defined the early Antarctic models. The dial, however, reflects a 1970s aesthetic. It features a gray-blue chapter ring fitted with applied baton hour markers and lume dots positioned at the outer edge. Printed dot-dash minute markers complete the layout. The dial printing remains crisp, including the period-correct Nivada Grenchen logo at 12 o’clock and the “Antarctic Glacier” text at 6 o’clock.
Rediscovered Dials and Movements
The central story behind this release is the discovery of unused original dials and ETA caliber 2783 movements in the archives of Cenic Watches, the workshop operated by master restorer Nicolas Huissoud. These components were stored for decades and developed a light, natural patina while retaining full structural integrity.

The ETA 2783 was a common choice for Nivada Grenchen in the 1970s. Introduced in 1974, this automatic caliber operates at 3 Hz and features a date window at 3 o’clock. Its dimensions match the 35 mm Antarctic case perfectly, making it a seamless fit for a historically aligned rebuild.
Case and Construction
The recovered components are housed in the classic 35 mm stainless steel Antarctic case. The case blends vertical brushing with polished accents to recreate the look of period references. The compact diameter strengthens the vintage character, giving the watch proportions that reflect the era in which the original components were produced.
Extremely Limited Availability
Only 18 usable dials and 18 ETA 2783 movements were found, which limits production of the Antarctic Glacier Vintage to just 18 numbered pieces. Each watch is built using these recovered parts, making the run a true one-time release.

Regular Production Antarctic Glacier Models
Nivada Grenchen is also reintroducing the 1970s Glacier design as a permanent addition to the Antarctic range. Two regular production versions launch alongside the Vintage, a 35 mm Antarctic Glacier using a Soprod P054 hand-wound movement, and a 38 mm Antarctic Glacier using a Soprod P024 automatic movement.

Both models recreate the dial design of the original Glacier pieces. They also replace the exhibition back found on the Vintage with the Antarctic collection’s signature medallion. The 35 mm version features the familiar penguin motif. The 38 mm version uses an engraving of the American Antarctic base from the 1950s.
