Ferrari Revives The Manual Driving Experience With The New 12Cilindri Manuale
Ferrari has unveiled the 12Cilindri Manuale, a new limited-production version of its V12 grand tourer that reintroduces the engagement of a manual transmission through an innovative electronic system. Rather than developing a conventional manual gearbox, the Italian marque has engineered a unique solution that combines the driving feel of a traditional three-pedal setup with the performance and efficiency of its existing eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
A New Take on the Manual Gearbox
At the heart of the Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale is the brand’s new Manuale By-Wire system. While the car retains the same eight-speed dual-clutch transmission found in the standard model, the first six forward gears and reverse can now be selected using a classic gated gear lever and a dedicated clutch pedal.
The setup has been designed to recreate the interaction of a traditional manual transmission while relying on advanced electronic controls operating beneath the surface.
The iconic open-metal shift gate is paired with a polished aluminum shift knob, reinforcing the mechanical feel that has become synonymous with Ferrari’s classic manual sports cars.
Electronic Clutch with Authentic Driver Involvement
Unlike a conventional manual gearbox, the clutch pedal is electronically controlled. A dedicated sensor measures the driver’s pedal input and translates it into hydraulic commands that operate the dual-clutch transmission.
The gear lever also incorporates Hall-effect sensors that detect every shift movement with precision, while an electric locking mechanism prevents accidental gear engagement when the vehicle is not operating in Manual mode.
Ferrari has even programmed the system to replicate one of the defining characteristics of traditional manual cars—the possibility of stalling the engine if the clutch is not operated correctly.
Dual Personalities in One Transmission
Starting the vehicle while pressing only the brake pedal activates the standard automatic driving mode, allowing the transmission to function as a conventional dual-clutch gearbox.
However, starting the car with the clutch pedal depressed immediately engages Manual mode, placing the driver in full control of gear selection through the gated shifter.
Drivers can seamlessly return to automatic operation while driving whenever desired. Ferrari notes that seventh and eighth gears remain dedicated to relaxed cruising and long-distance grand touring, emphasizing comfort and efficiency during high-speed travel.
Naturally Aspirated V12 Remains Untouched
Mechanically, the powertrain carries over unchanged from the standard Ferrari 12Cilindri.
Power comes from the naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine, producing 819 horsepower and 500 lb-ft (678 Nm) of torque. Performance remains uncompromised despite the introduction of the new transmission system.
Ferrari claims the 12Cilindri Manuale accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.0 seconds, while top speed remains an impressive 340 km/h (211 mph).
Extremely Limited Production
Exclusivity remains a key element of the project. Ferrari will produce only 1,499 examples of the 12Cilindri Manuale, with every car offered through the company’s Tailor Made personalization program, allowing owners to configure highly bespoke specifications.
Official pricing has not yet been announced, although it is expected to command a premium over the standard Ferrari 12Cilindri, reflecting both its rarity and the development of its innovative Manuale By-Wire transmission.
