Fears Closes The Brunswick Jump Hour Chapter With The ‘Ultimus’
Fears is closing the chapter on its Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour with the new ‘Ultimus’, a limited pre-order edition created in collaboration with Andrew Morgan. First introduced in 2023 through a collaboration between Fears, Christopher Ward and the Alliance of British Watch and Clock Makers, the Jump Hour has become one of the distinctive models within the Brunswick collection. The Ultimus takes the established concept in a more contemporary direction while retaining the characteristic cushion-shaped case.
The new watch is available exclusively for pre-order for one week, from August 10 to 17, making it the final new Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour edition.
A Different Approach to the Jump Hour Display
The most significant changes are found on the dial. Rather than concealing most of the hour disc, the Ultimus places the jump-hour mechanism prominently at the centre of the design.
The 12 Arabic numerals of the rotating hour disc remain visible around the dial, while a translucent minute disc sits above them. A black central minute hand indicates the time against the surrounding minute scale, creating a layered display that combines the mechanical character of the jump-hour complication with a more contemporary visual treatment.
Both the dial and the two display elements are made from luminescent ceramic, an unusual material choice that gives the watch an especially distinctive appearance in low-light conditions. The entire display glows in a pale blue tone, including the hour numerals and minute track.
The luminescent treatment also incorporates a subtle gradient around the perimeter of the dial. This becomes particularly noticeable in darkness and helps emphasise the domed profile of the sapphire crystal.
Another contemporary detail is the cyclops lens positioned above the hour display. In addition to magnifying the current hour, it adds another visual layer to the otherwise traditional cushion-case design.
Pocket-Watch Heritage Meets Modern Wristwatch Design
The Brunswick Jump Hour has always drawn heavily from Fears’ historical designs, particularly the pocket watches and cushion-shaped wristwatches associated with the 1920s.
The Ultimus retains this connection through its case architecture but introduces elements that are more commonly associated with modern sports and everyday wristwatches. The combination of the large domed sapphire crystal, cyclops lens and highly visible luminous display gives the watch a noticeably more contemporary character.
The case measures 40.50 mm in diameter and 12.80 mm thick, including the domed crystal. It is manufactured from stainless steel and features a fully polished finish, preserving the more refined character traditionally associated with the Brunswick line.
Despite its dressier appearance, the watch offers 100 metres of water resistance, giving the Ultimus considerably more practical protection than its vintage-inspired design might suggest.
Sellita Automatic Movement with Jump-Hour Module
Inside the case is the same mechanical architecture used throughout the Brunswick Jump Hour family: a Sellita SW200 automatic movement combined with the Christopher Ward JJ01 jump-hour module.
The system separates the conventional continuous hour display from the jump-hour mechanism. Instead of the hour hand gradually moving around the dial, the hour disc advances instantaneously once every 60 minutes, switching directly from one numeral to the next.
The movement operates with a 38-hour power reserve and is visible through the case architecture, with the automatic winding system fitted with a custom Fears Bristol Flower rotor.
The combination provides a relatively familiar automatic base calibre with a much less conventional display mechanism, making the movement architecture central to the identity of the Brunswick Jump Hour.
Final Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour
The Fears Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour ‘Ultimus’ is available exclusively during a one-week pre-order period running from August 10 to 17, 2026, either directly online or through the Fears boutique in Bristol.
Two configurations are offered. The watch comes on an Epsom leather strap for € 4,300, while an additional five-link stainless steel bracelet brings the price to € 4,600.
More than simply another variation of the Brunswick Jump Hour, the Ultimus changes the visual language of the model through its luminous ceramic display, translucent minute disc and cyclops lens. At the same time, the cushion-shaped case and jump-hour mechanism maintain the connection with the design introduced in 2023.
As the final new Brunswick 40.5 Jump Hour, the Ultimus represents the closing version of a distinctive chapter in Fears’ modern collection, combining the brand’s historical design language with a distinctly contemporary display.
