Fears Brunswick 39 Perpetual Calendar: A New Chapter For The British Classic

As Fears marks two important milestones in 2026—180 years since its foundation and a decade since Nicholas Bowman-Scargill revived the brand—the British watchmaker introduces one of the most technically ambitious additions to its modern collection. The Fears Brunswick 39 Perpetual Calendar brings a sophisticated calendar complication to the brand’s most recognizable case design, while simultaneously introducing a substantially revised interpretation of the Brunswick.

The result is a watch that retains the understated character associated with Fears, but combines it with a considerably more complex mechanical architecture.

A redesigned Brunswick case

The most obvious change concerns the case itself. While the Brunswick’s characteristic cushion-shaped silhouette remains intact, Fears has reworked its proportions for this new 39 mm model.

The stainless-steel case measures 39 mm across and 37 mm in length, excluding the lugs, giving the watch a wider-than-long appearance that distinguishes it from earlier Brunswick references. More importantly, the revised architecture has allowed Fears to significantly reduce the thickness to just 9.40 mm.

The case is finished with a combination of circular brushing and polished bevels, while the bezel has also been redesigned. Instead of the convex profile seen on previous Brunswick models, the new watch uses a polished concave bezel, contributing to its more refined visual character.

The lugs extend the overall length to 45.50 mm, keeping the proportions relatively compact for a 39 mm watch. At the opposite end, the familiar onion-shaped crown has been retained, although its dimensions have been reduced compared with previous Brunswick executions.

Water resistance is rated at 50 metres.

A perpetual calendar with a restrained aesthetic

Adding a perpetual calendar to a watch with such a minimalist design language presents an obvious challenge: how to display a considerable amount of information without compromising legibility.

Fears has opted for a traditional symmetrical arrangement across a Silver Mink dial, with the various indications distributed across four sub-dials.

At 12 o’clock, the upper sub-dial displays the month and leap-year cycle. The date occupies the sub-dial at 3 o’clock, while the day of the week is displayed at 9 o’clock.

Completing the complication is a moonphase indication at 6 o’clock, marking another first for Fears. The moon is rendered in silver, maintaining the restrained aesthetic of the rest of the dial.

The sub-dials feature concentric textures that subtly distinguish them from the main dial surface, while black printing provides contrast throughout. The railroad-style minute track further reinforces the watch’s classical character.

Rather than adding a conventional central seconds hand, Fears has deliberately omitted it, leaving the dial visually quieter and allowing the perpetual-calendar indications to remain the focus.

Details that connect it to Fears

Despite the complexity of the calendar display, the Brunswick 39 remains immediately identifiable as a Fears watch.

The applied hour markers are quadruple-beveled, diamond-polished and black-gold plated, while the brand’s characteristic pipette-shaped hands receive similarly refined treatment.

Another interesting detail is the typography. Fears developed its own typeface, named Bristol after the city where the company is based, and uses it throughout the dial. It is a subtle element, but one that gives the watch an additional layer of identity.

There is also a small splash of colour in an otherwise monochromatic composition: the number 31 on the date indication is printed in bright cyan blue.

Sellita and Dubois Dépraz power the complication

The Brunswick 39 Perpetual Calendar represents another important step for Fears mechanically. While the company has previously collaborated with other specialists on complicated watches, this is its first high-complication model carrying only the Fears name.

The movement combines a Sellita SW300 automatic base calibre with a Dubois Dépraz perpetual-calendar module.

The automatic movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and provides approximately 47 hours of power reserve.

Visible through the sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement has received considerable decorative attention. The bridges and plates feature frosted surfaces, hand-polished anglage and dark rhodium finishing, while a custom solid 18K gold rotor carries the Fears Bristol Flower motif.

The perpetual-calendar mechanism is designed to automatically account for the differing lengths of the months and leap years. Assuming the watch remains correctly wound and set, it should not require a calendar correction until 2100, when the exception in the Gregorian calendar means that the leap-year cycle must be manually adjusted.

Fears also includes a watch winder with the watch, a useful addition for a perpetual calendar that is particularly sensitive to being allowed to stop.

A new flagship for the Brunswick collection

The Brunswick 39 Perpetual Calendar represents an interesting evolution of Fears’ most recognizable design. Rather than creating a completely new case to accommodate its first perpetual calendar, the brand has taken the familiar Brunswick silhouette and refined its proportions, finishing and architecture.

The 39 mm × 37 mm case, 9.40 mm thickness and 45.50 mm lug-to-lug measurement give the watch a relatively compact footprint, while the combination of brushed surfaces, polished bevels and a concave bezel adds considerably more definition to the cushion-shaped profile.

Most importantly, the perpetual calendar has been incorporated without turning the Brunswick into an overly technical-looking watch. The Silver Mink dial, restrained typography, textured sub-dials and traditional Fears hands preserve the brand’s elegant aesthetic while accommodating four separate calendar indications and a moonphase.

The Fears Brunswick 39 Perpetual Calendar is now part of the regular collection, rather than being a limited edition. It is available through the Fears boutique in Bristol, the brand’s official website and selected retailers internationally.

The price is GBP 26,950, with a watch winder included.

For Fears, it is an appropriately ambitious watch for a year that celebrates both the company’s long history and the first ten years of its modern revival.
