Citizen Honors A Diving Legend With Aqualand 40th Anniversary Reissue

To mark the 40th anniversary of one of its most influential dive watches, Citizen has unveiled a tribute piece that blends historical authenticity with modern functionality: the Aqualand Promaster 40th Anniversary Limited Edition. This release honors the legacy of the original 1985 model that made history as the first dive watch with a built-in electronic depth meter.

Heritage-Inspired Design, Functional at Depth

The 2025 edition of the Aqualand Promaster retains the distinctive asymmetrical case profile that made the original Ref. C0023 instantly recognizable. With a commanding 50.70 mm diameter and 14.80 mm thickness, the stainless steel case is finished in a matte grey tone, faithfully capturing the utilitarian look of the early models. Gold-tone accents on the crown, pushers, depth sensor, and bezel pay tribute to the vintage C033 variant, reinforcing the retro appeal while maintaining rugged, purpose-driven aesthetics.

Dual Display and Enhanced Readability

The dial layout remains consistent with the original, combining analog and digital displays. The analog side features large luminous hour markers, oversized gold-edged hands, and a bold orange minute hand for maximum underwater visibility. The sunray-brushed black dial adds a touch of refinement, while the digital screen integrated into the upper dial segment provides access to multiple functions. Surrounding the dial is a steeply inclined minute track that aids in precise time reading.

At the heart of the watch is the Citizen Caliber C 520, a robust quartz movement built for versatility and precision. It not only displays running time, but also offers a full calendar function and a daily alarm. Additionally, it includes a chronograph function capable of measuring up to 60 minutes with 1/100th-second accuracy. Essential for diving, the movement supports depth display, a diving timer, and an ascent rate alarm to help divers manage safe resurfacing. It operates with an accuracy rating of ±20 seconds per month and has a battery life of approximately two years.

Eco-Conscious Strap and Limited Production

The watch is fitted with a black polyurethane strap featuring the signature wave pattern, a nod to its underwater credentials. In line with Citizen’s ongoing sustainability initiatives, the strap is made from BENEBiOIL, a biomass-based material derived from plants. Each timepiece is individually numbered and engraved on the caseback with a commemorative 40th-anniversary motif, highlighting its limited edition status. In total, Citizen is producing just 5,800 units of this model globally.
