Christopher Ward has introduced the C60 Clipper GMT, a limited-edition sports GMT created in collaboration with Pan American World Airways (Pan Am). The release draws inspiration from Pan Am’s pioneering role in transatlantic aviation during the Jet Age and combines the brand’s professional dive-watch platform with travel-focused functionality.

Pan Am is widely regarded as one of the most influential airlines of the 20th century, particularly for its role in shaping long-haul international travel. On October 26, 1958, the airline became the first to operate a commercial jet service across the Atlantic using the Boeing 707 Clipper America. This historic milestone forms the foundation of the C60 Clipper GMT’s design and naming.

Case and Construction

The watch is housed in a 42 mm stainless steel case based on Christopher Ward’s Light-Catcher architecture, featuring a mix of brushed and polished surfaces. Despite its travel-oriented complication, the C60 Clipper GMT maintains full dive-watch credentials, offering 300 meters of water resistance and a screw-down crown.

Case thickness is measured at 12.45 mm, allowing the watch to retain a robust, tool-watch profile while remaining wearable for daily use. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, while the solid steel caseback is engraved with Pan Am’s historic globe emblem, often referred to as the “Blue Meatball” logo.

Worldtimer Bezel

One of the defining elements of the C60 Clipper GMT is its bi-directional 24-click bezel, which replaces the traditional dive bezel found on the C60 Trident. The aluminium bezel insert is printed with 24 international airport codes, each representing a destination served by Pan Am during its operational history.

Instead of the conventional city-name layout commonly seen on worldtimers, the use of airport codes reinforces the aviation theme. The code EYW (Key West) is highlighted in red, referencing Pan Am’s original base of operations and the departure point of its first flight.

The dial features an eggshell-toned base, paired with applied hour markers filled with vintage-style Super-LumiNova to enhance legibility in low-light conditions. A 24-hour scale runs around the outer edge of the dial in blue and red, coordinating with the GMT hand for tracking a second time zone.

Additional details include a blue GMT hand, a seconds hand with a Clipper aircraft-shaped counterbalance, and a discreet Pan Am logo positioned above the date window at six o’clock. The date disc includes a subtle nod to aviation history, with the number 26 printed in blue to commemorate Pan Am’s landmark 1958 transatlantic flight.

Movement and Functionality

Powering the watch is the Sellita SW330-2 automatic GMT movement, offering a 56-hour power reserve and an accuracy rating of ±20 seconds per day. The movement provides “true GMT” functionality, allowing the local hour hand to be adjusted independently in one-hour increments without stopping the movement.

With the crown in its second position, the wearer can adjust the date in one direction and jump the GMT hand forward or backward in hourly steps in the other. This configuration makes the watch particularly practical for frequent travelers crossing time zones.
