A Heritage Forged in Ice

The Antarctic name carries real weight in the Nivada story. First introduced in the 1950s as the “Aquamatic,” it was famously worn by U.S. Navy personnel during Operation Deep Freeze in 1955 — a brutal Antarctic expedition that pushed the watch to its limits and inspired its eventual renaming. A GMT variant quietly appeared in the 1960s in extremely small numbers, with only a handful ever surfacing today. It’s from one of these rare originals that Hodinkee and Nivada drew direct inspiration for this new creation.

Compact Dimensions, Serious Performance

Sized at 36 mm in diameter and 40 mm lug-to-lug, the watch offers a perfectly balanced vintage-style fit that collectors love. Inside beats the reliable Soprod C125 automatic movement, offering a 42-hour power reserve and operating at 4Hz. The dual-crown layout enables quick adjustments: the crown at 2 o’clock rotates the 24-hour inner bezel, while the 4 o’clock crown controls the GMT hand, date, and local time.

One major upgrade exclusive to this edition is the switch to a sapphire crystal, which boosts water resistance from 50 meters to 100 meters — a fitting nod to the Antarctic’s original reputation as a tough-as-nails tool watch.

A Dial Built for Adventure

The watch features a striking charcoal dial paired with a bi-color 24-hour internal bezel — painted black for the night hours and white for the day hours — giving the GMT function intuitive readability at a glance. A framed date window at 3 o’clock adds utility, while applied hour indexes and hands are generously filled with bright green Super-LumiNova for excellent visibility in low light.

In fact, the lume treatment goes even further: in addition to the indexes and hands, the dial inscriptions, the checkered GMT hand, and the entire 24-hour bezel are also filled with Super-LumiNova, ensuring the watch glows vividly and remains highly legible in darkness.

The dial layout is deliberately clean: the full “Nivada Grenchen” logo now sits at 12 o’clock, balanced by a simple “Automatic GMT” at 6 o’clock, while the classic “Antarctic” script is omitted entirely. This pared-down design enhances legibility without losing its vintage charm.

A Case Honoring Its Roots

The case embraces a tool-oriented aesthetic, with a vertically brushed top surface echoing the 1960s EPSA compressor cases. At just 11.1mm thick, it’s noticeably slimmer than the standard Antarctic GMT, and the solid steel caseback proudly displays an engraved penguin medallion — a playful yet fitting homage to its polar heritage.
