Marking half a century since the introduction of its groundbreaking light-powered technology, Citizen unveils the Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Edition—a limited release that highlights the brand’s continued focus on precision, materials innovation, and refined Japanese craftsmanship.

A Dial Rooted in Japanese Craftsmanship
At the heart of this release is a highly distinctive dial crafted from traditional Japanese washi paper. The surface is finished in chitose midori—a deep green tone inspired by evergreen pine needles, symbolizing longevity.
The coloration process involves hand-dyeing the washi using a blend of indigo and ibuki kariyasu (a natural yellow dye), resulting in a dial that displays rich texture and dynamic tonal variation depending on light conditions.
The dial is completed with applied hour markers filled with lume, ensuring readability in low-light conditions, while a framed date window positioned at 3 o’clock adds everyday practicality. A white minute track runs along the rehaut, enhancing precision when reading the time. The dauphine-style hour and minute hands, also treated with luminous material, reinforce the watch’s refined yet functional character.
Adding to the commemorative identity, subtle gold accents are used throughout, including a gold-toned seconds hand and an eagle emblem positioned on the lower half of the dial. This eagle motif is not merely decorative—it signifies that the watch belongs to the brand’s premium The Citizen series, highlighting its place within the upper tier of the manufacture’s offerings.
Super Titanium Case and Bracelet
The watch is housed in a 40 mm case with a thickness of 12.20 mm, crafted from Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium, a material known for being approximately five times harder than stainless steel while also being about 40% lighter, significantly improving wearing comfort over extended periods.
Visually, the case combines predominantly brushed surfaces with polished accents on the bezel and lug facets, creating a refined interplay of finishes. It is paired with a five-row Super Titanium bracelet, secured by a folding clasp for a seamless fit on the wrist.
Both the case and bracelet are treated with Citizen’s Duratect Platinum coating, a surface-hardening technology that not only enhances scratch resistance but also gives the watch a bright, almost luminous silver tone. The model is completed with a water resistance rating of 100 meters, making it well-suited for daily wear.
Reinforcing its position within the premium segment, the eagle emblem is also sculpted in relief on both the crown and the caseback, creating a consistent visual identity across the watch and further underlining its affiliation to The Citizen line.
High-Precision Eco-Drive Caliber A060
Powering the watch is the in-house Caliber A060, an advanced Eco-Drive movement engineered for exceptional accuracy and long-term reliability. It delivers an impressive precision rating of ±5 seconds per year, placing it among the most accurate light-powered movements available today.
As expected from Eco-Drive technology, the movement is powered entirely by light, eliminating the need for battery replacements. Once fully charged, it can run for up to 18 months when the power-saving mode is activated, ensuring consistent performance even when not worn for extended periods.
The movement also integrates a perpetual calendar function that automatically adjusts for varying month lengths and leap years, requiring no manual correction until February 28, 2100. Additionally, the independently adjustable hour hand allows for quick and convenient time zone changes, a useful feature for frequent travelers.
