Hands-On With The New Schwarz Etienne 1902 Synergy By Peter Speake
Swiss manufacture Schwarz Etienne has teamed up with independent English watchmaker Peter Speake for a new interpretation of its 1902 collection, resulting in the new Schwarz Etienne 1902 Synergy by Peter Speake. Based on the 1902 Réserve de Marche, the latest release combines classical hand-wound watchmaking with a more contemporary and architectural dial design, while preserving the manufacture’s in-house mechanical foundation.

A Multi-Layered Dial With Contemporary Character
The most distinctive element of the watch is undoubtedly its multi-layered dial construction. Protected by a shaped sapphire crystal, the display creates an impressive sense of depth through the use of suspended elements and contrasting finishes. White lacquered surfaces are combined with Prussian blue details and subtle orange accents, delivering a clean but highly technical aesthetic.

The dial layout remains faithful to the existing 1902 Réserve de Marche configuration, with the power reserve indicator positioned at 2 o’clock and the small seconds display at 6 o’clock. However, the combination of grained and polished surfaces gives the watch a dynamic appearance that changes depending on the angle of light. The layered construction also enhances legibility while adding visual complexity without overwhelming the design.
Lightweight Titanium Case
The watch comes housed in a 39 mm Grade 5 titanium case measuring just under 11 mm thick. Its proportions keep the profile elegant and wearable, while the lightweight nature of titanium ensures everyday comfort on the wrist.

The case features polished surfaces and softly curved lugs that follow the classical styling of the 1902 collection while maintaining a modern feel. Completing the exterior is a textured blue strap with a rubber lining and a matching titanium pin buckle, reinforcing the watch’s sporty yet refined character.
In-House Movement With 120-Hour Power Reserve
Powering the watch is the in-house MSE 311.00 manual-winding calibre. The movement is equipped with twin barrels and delivers an impressive 120-hour power reserve, alongside a stop-seconds function for precise time setting.

Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement architecture draws inspiration from traditional pocket watches, featuring six bridges with carefully executed finishing throughout. Decorative details include sandblasted and rhodium-treated surfaces, angled Geneva stripes, polished bevels, and blue lacquer-filled engravings on the ratchet wheels referencing both the limited edition and the Synergy collaboration.

Our Take
I had the opportunity to see the Schwarz Etienne 1902 Synergy by Peter Speake live in Geneva about a month ago, where I was also able to spend some hands-on time with the watch. As someone who is a strong vintage enthusiast and generally gravitates more toward classic designs than contemporary creations, I have to admit that this release genuinely surprised me.

The combination of the layered dial architecture, lightweight titanium case, and beautifully executed movement creates a watch with a strong personality while still respecting traditional watchmaking codes. Among the current 1902 collection, this new collaboration with Peter Speake easily stands out as my personal favourite.
