In 2014 we saw the birth of the curious Type 1 watch from the Belgian watchmaker Ressence which, in addition to its unique dial with moving discs, came with a case without a visible crown, and it was at the beginning of this year that the Type 1º Round appeared.

The Type 1º Round, which many will have difficulty distinguishing from the original model due to its clear similarities, in short, appears thinner and flatter on the outside and with a cleaner dial.

Moving immediately to the recent ‘Round M’ it comes with a multicoloured dial hence the origin of the ‘M’ in its name. And if many in the past may have been bored with some monotony of colours in the Ressence Type 1, then we have good news, as the new Ressence presents a varied colour palette, with the rings surrounding the minute indicators painted blue, the hour indicators green, seconds in yellow and weekdays in red. The background is faded grey tones accompanied by the darker grey tone of the hands of each of the discs, all of them with coloured tips in different shades, white accents that extend across each of the four discs, and all filled with Grade A Super-LumiNova.

The watch comes dressed in a Grade 5 titanium case measuring 42.70mm in diameter and 11mm thick, which comes with a polished finish, wire lugs, double domed sapphire crystal, solid rear case with crown which, in addition to setting the time, also allows winding it despite its automatic movement and splash resistance of just 10m.

Inside it operates the ROCS 1.3 module, which is based on the modified ETA 2892, with 212 components, reaching 28,800 Vph and offering a day and a half of power reserve.

The new Ressence Type 1st Round M comes attached to a light grey rubber strap and is priced at CHF 16,800.

Ressence presents the new Type 3 EE green-‘Eucalyptus’.

The new Type 3, which is presented for the first time with a coloured dial, since all previous versions until now shared the same black background with indices in different tones, now arrives in an interesting eucalyptus green.

The watch maintains the rest of the layout, with an oil-filed dial, made up of internal rotating discs, where we can find the largest disc that provides the minutes with the help of the minute outer ring, the second wider disc that provides the hours, a second outer ring responsible for the date and even smaller discs responsible for reading the days of the week and the oil temperature.

On the outside, the traditional 44mm by 15mm titanium case, sapphire glass with edges, and no crown, as the adjustments to the dial are provided by the handling of the case back and textured strap in green with titanium buckle.

Inside, it operates the Caliber ROCS 3 manual movement, which operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and offers up to 38 hours of power reserve.

The Ressence Type 3 EE will be available from October with a price of CHF 38,200 (taxes not included).

Ressence, in collaboration with the Monaco-based collective Art In Time, presents the new Ressence Type 5 AIT, a limited edition of 12 watches, whose flagship is to contribute to the protection of the environment and the sustainable promotion of local and global development.

Of the 12 watches, only 11 will be made available to the public and each one with unique yellow detail on the hours’ disc, while the 12 watch presents the Ressence logo in yellow and will be sold at a charity event in September with the proceeds going to the Prince Albert II Foundation of Monaco.

The Foundation, created in 2006, aims to bring together important personalities from the political, scientific, economic and civil spheres around the world with the aim of protecting the ocean and land, contributing to the protection of endangered species, improving the living conditions of rural communities through sustainable and ethical solutions.

Regarding the new Ressence TYPE 5, it stands out above all from the previous variants by presenting a grey dial with several yellow details. And starting with the Grade 5 titanium tapered case, it features a sandwich-style construction, with polished and satin finishing, uni-directional bezel, which now comes with protrusions every 10 minutes and with the 60-minute mark being replaced with an inverted yellow triangle, domed sapphire crystal and the rear-mounted crown deploys the Ressence Compression lock System (RCLS).

As for the dial, it now features a yellow outer ring minute, and the usual layout of three uneven discs, one for hours, one for seconds and one for oil temperature, all of them sharing yellow accents and filled with generous layers of Super-LumiNova allowing easy reading even in low light situations. Below the oil-filled upper chamber is an air-filled lower chamber that houses the automatic movement, which uses a magnet transmission to drive the discs on the Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) dial.

Inside it is powered by the patented ROCS 5 based on the customized Caliber 2824/2 which operates at 28,800 Vph and offers up to 36 hours of power reserve.

The watch is supplied with a yellow rubber strap with a grade 5 titanium buckle.

Ressence, after getting used to oil-filled dials over the last few years, now presents the Type 8C with a non-oil-filled dial and an “entry-level price”.

The new Ressence Type 8C stands out at first sight for being the simplest, where the usual “extra” complications no longer have space in the new cobalt blue dial.

Keeping its signature, the ROCS (Ressence Orbital Convex System), which, in a very simplistic way, provides the reading of the time through several discs that rotate around the dial, and which, in the specific case of the Type 8C, turns the larger diameter disc, where the minute hand lives, around the dial, “dragging” with it a smaller diameter disc that works as the hours sub-dial.

The new Ressence watch and sixth in the lineage of the Belgian brand, is based on a tapered case with a sandwich-style construction, in Grade 5 titanium and 42.9mm diameter, with a polished and satin-brushed finish and which weighs just 42 grams including the strap, hide lugs or as the brand calls it with a “skirt” and no crown in sight, another of its novelties, which is now integrated into the case back.

The cobalt blue dial, in addition to aggregating the two discs that work through the patented ROCS system, includes the Ressence logo at 12 o’clock in the hour sub-dial, hands and the hours and minutes markers all in white filled with Super-LumiNova that in the dark it glows blue.

Inside operates the automatic movement based on the ETA Caliber 2892-2 that offers up to 36 hours of power reserve.

The watch will be available from March 30 at the brand’s official retailers at a price of CHF 12,500 (excluding taxes).

Our Opinion

The new Type 8C for many is far from an entry-level, CHF 12,500 (excluding taxes) is a lot of money, however, if we take into account previous models the price is clearly friendlier, it is clear that with it many of the complications were sacrificed, but the watch does not fail to distinguish itself from its peers, housing ROCS technology and translating its value.

While the 42.8mm snare may “scare” some audience with more modest wrists, the fact that it comes with hiding lugs shatters part of that myth, making it fit on smaller wrists and that’s a smart move of the brand.

Finally, a reference to the cobalt blue dial, which breaks with the monochromatic black dials of the rest of the collection and which is undoubtedly other of the positive points that we have to point out.
