Inspired By Asakusa: Discover The New Kiwame Tokyo MUNE

Japanese microbrand Kiwame Tokyo expands its collection with the new MUNE, a refined field watch that draws direct inspiration from the architectural landscape of Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district. Following the launch of the Iwao series, the latest release continues the brand’s design philosophy of blending contemporary watchmaking with traditional Japanese visual elements.

The name MUNE, which translates to “ridge” or “roof ridge,” reflects the central design theme of the watch, inspired by the distinctive rooflines of Asakusa’s historic temples and gates, particularly the iconic Sensō-ji Temple and Kaminarimon Gate.

Case and Wearability

The Kiwame Tokyo MUNE is housed in a 38 mm stainless steel case crafted from 316L steel, offering proportions that suit a wide range of wrist sizes. The case measures 9.50 mm in thickness with a 46 mm lug-to-lug distance, giving it a slim and highly wearable profile for daily use.

The finishing combines brushed and polished surfaces, balancing practicality with elegance. The case flanks feature a brushed treatment designed to better withstand daily wear, while polished upper lug surfaces add refinement and visual contrast.

Its softly curved case sides improve comfort on the wrist, while the slim bezel and flat sapphire crystal help maintain a clean, balanced profile. The front crystal is made from anti-reflective sapphire, enhancing clarity and scratch resistance.

Water resistance is rated at 100 metres, making the MUNE suitable for everyday use, including exposure to water during regular activities.

Dial Design Inspired by Traditional Japanese Architecture

The dial is where the MUNE’s architectural inspiration becomes most evident.

Kiwame Tokyo offers the watch in two versions, the MUNE Usuki with an ivory dial and the MUNE Kurotsuki with a black dial.

The defining element is the sculptural 12 o’clock index, designed to echo the ridge line of traditional Japanese temple roofs. This architectural motif serves as the visual anchor of the dial.

The Usuki version features a warm ivory dial tone paired with dark applied numerals, creating a classic and understated aesthetic with strong legibility.

The Kurotsuki version takes a more dramatic approach with a black lacquer dial, adding depth and light play to the surface. Brushed numeral markers and an enhanced luminous ring further emphasize its more technical, modern character.

A particularly distinctive detail is found on the seconds hand counterweight, shaped to reference the sweeping roof silhouette of the Kaminarimon Gate. On the black dial version, the seconds hand tip is finished in a deep vermilion red, a nod to the traditional red pillars found in Japanese temple architecture.

Powered by the Miyota 9039 Automatic Movement

Inside the MUNE beats the reliable Miyota 9039 automatic calibre, a popular choice among premium microbrands and a fitting selection for a Japanese-made timepiece.

The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and delivers a 42-hour power reserve. It includes 24 jewels and benefits from Parashock anti-shock protection, ensuring dependable performance for daily wear.

The movement is protected by a solid engraved screw-down caseback, reinforcing the watch’s robust everyday credentials.

Strap and Bracelet Options

Both dial variants are delivered on an Italian-made genuine calf leather strap in navy blue, accented by contrasting stitching for added visual detail.

The strap includes quick-release spring bars, allowing for easy strap changes without tools. It is secured by a stainless steel pin buckle.

For those seeking a sportier look, Kiwame Tokyo also offers an optional three-link BR01 flat-link stainless steel bracelet, adding further versatility to the watch.
