German watchmaker Hanhart has unveiled the new Thermosphere Limited Edition, a special model developed in collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg State Firefighters Association. Drawing its foundations from the brand’s Aquasphere diving watch, the Thermosphere adapts the concept for a completely different professional environment, incorporating timing features inspired by the breathing apparatus monitoring systems used by firefighters during emergency interventions.

Limited to just 112 pieces—a tribute to Europe’s emergency telephone number for fire and rescue services—the watch combines robust construction, high visibility, and practical functionality.

Familiar Aquasphere Architecture

The Thermosphere shares its case design with the Aquasphere collection, featuring a 42 mm stainless steel case with a mix of brushed and polished finishes. The case measures 12.95 mm thick and spans 49 mm lug-to-lug, offering a balanced presence on the wrist.

Built as a true professional-grade instrument, the watch provides 300 meters of water resistance and comes equipped with a screw-down crown protected by crown guards, a helium escape valve, and a screwed caseback. The latter is decorated with the emblem of the Baden-Württemberg State Firefighters Association, highlighting the watch’s special-edition status.

Bezel Designed Around Firefighting Operations

One of the most distinctive elements of the Thermosphere is its bezel. Unlike the Aquasphere’s traditional diving scale, the new model features a bidirectional rotating bezel fitted with a blue ceramic insert displaying luminous triangular markers.

For the first time in the 417 Pilot collection, Hanhart introduces a Grade 5 titanium case, replacing the traditional stainless steel construction found in previous models. Hanhart continues its legacy of producing durable and visually distinctive chronographs with the latest additions to the 415 ES line: the Panda and Reverse Panda dial configurations. Drawing inspiration from a model originally introduced in the 1960s, these new releases merge historical aesthetics with contemporary construction and precision engineering.

Case and Construction

The new 415 ES chronographs are housed in a 39 mm stainless steel case—ES stands for “Edelstahl,” German for stainless steel—with a case thickness of 13.50 mm and a compact lug-to-lug distance of 46 mm. This size maintains the watch’s vintage proportions while offering modern wrist presence and comfort.

A signature design element is the fluted bidirectional rotating bezel, crafted in matte black ceramic with engraved 60-minute scale and an inverted triangle at the top. The 60-click bezel provides tactile feedback and is free of luminous material, preserving a clean and functional tool-watch aesthetic. The case features classic pump pushers and a deeply knurled crown, while the solid caseback and screw-down construction ensure a water resistance of up to 100 meters.

Dial and Display

Inside the 415 ES Panda and Reverse Panda beats the hand-wound Sellita SW510 M, a modern chronograph movement offering robust performance and ease of maintenance. It delivers a power reserve of 58 hours and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz). Historical Design, Contemporary Engineering

The 417 ES Heritage Flyback pays homage to the original Hanhart pilot chronographs produced in the mid-20th century, originally developed for the German armed forces. This new iteration brings back a defining feature from that era: the red chronograph pusher. More than a decorative accent, this red pusher—crafted today from durable HyCeram—served historically as a safeguard against accidental resets during flight operations.

Other heritage-inspired design cues include the bi-directional fluted bezel with red marker, a domed sapphire crystal, and a matte black dial finished to emphasize legibility under all conditions.

The dial itself is executed in a bi-compax layout, with a 30-minute chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and a running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. It features classic syringe-style hour and minute hands, which, along with the white Arabic numerals, are filled with Super-LumiNova for excellent readability in low light. A printed minute and second track runs around the outer edge of the dial, complemented by a central chronograph seconds hand.
