Bulova Lunar Pilot Black Hole Brings A More Compact Case
Bulova expands its Lunar Pilot collection with a new interpretation that combines a reduced case size with a striking all-black aesthetic. The Lunar Pilot Black Hole introduces a more wearable format while maintaining the distinctive design language inspired by the brand’s historic connection to space exploration.
Refined Dimensions for Everyday Wear
One of the most notable updates is the redesigned case. The cushion-shaped profile remains intact, but the diameter has been reduced to 41 mm, offering improved ergonomics compared to previous iterations. With a thickness of 13.05 mm and a 48 mm lug-to-lug, the watch strikes a balance between presence and comfort.
The case and bracelet feature a sandblasted finish with black PVD coating, giving the watch a uniform matte appearance. Contrasting glossy elements—such as the crown, pushers, and bezel ring—add subtle variation while preserving the monochromatic theme.
A Dial Built Around Depth and Contrast
The dial design reinforces the “Black Hole” concept through the use of Musou black coating, a material known for its exceptional light absorption. This creates an intense black backdrop that enhances the visibility of the grey-toned elements.
Applied hour markers and hands are finished in a muted grey and treated with Super-LumiNova, emitting a blue glow in low-light conditions. The chronograph layout follows a traditional tri-compax style, with a 60-minute counter positioned at 9 o’clock and a running seconds display balancing the dial. At 3 o’clock, the chronograph introduces a more technical feature by measuring time down to 1/20th of a second, emphasizing the watch’s precision capabilities.
An internal tachymeter scale, positioned beneath the sapphire crystal, adds both functionality and a sense of depth to the dial architecture.
High-Precision Quartz Performance
Powering the watch is Bulova’s proprietary NP20 high-performance quartz movement, operating at a frequency of 262 kHz. This significantly exceeds the frequency of standard quartz calibers, resulting in enhanced accuracy—typically measured in seconds per year.
The movement also enables a smooth sweeping chronograph seconds hand, a feature that distinguishes it from conventional quartz chronographs and aligns it more closely with the visual appeal of mechanical timepieces.
Caseback and Historical Reference
The caseback features a commemorative medallion that pays tribute to the brand’s space heritage, specifically linked to Dave Scott and his use of a Bulova chronograph during the Apollo 15 mission. The medallion is protected by a mineral glass insert, adding a collectible element to the watch.
