Amida Digitrend: A 70s Space-Era Watch Makes A Comeback

The distant 70s was not just an era of beautiful watches, it was also a time of futuristic design watches linked to space exploration, and it was around that time in 1976 that the Amida Digitrend appeared for the first time with a side digital display that read horizontally and which now almost half a century later it returns.

The eccentric Amida Digitrend was designed to be read by car drivers without turning their wrists, using a side display that uses an optical illusion created by a set of mirrors that reflect the time.

An inverted prism that portrays the hour and minute discs may lead many to think it is a Quartz watch when in reality it is a mechanical watch that operates through a jumping hours system.

The watch that now returns is very similar to the original, presenting in a stainless steel case with the dimensions of 39mm by 39.60mm and a height of 15.60mm, 1mm higher than its predecessor and featuring a brushed finish on the surfaces and polished on the bevels. The watch also comes with a crown at 3 o’clock, a semi-open case back and 50m water resistance.

The side display is once again faithful to the original, featuring a smaller window on the left for the hours and a wider one on the right for the minutes where we can also see part of the minute track, both painted with orange Arabic numerals and where we can also find the Amida logo.

Inside runs the Soprod Newton P092 automatic movement that operates at 28,800 Vph and offers up to 44 hours of power reserve.

The watch offers two strap options,, an integrated blade steel bracelet with a folding clasp or a charcoal Alcantara strap with an orange leather lining and a pin buckle, which arrives on May 28th for a price of CHF 2,900 plus taxes.
