Black-Tie Timekeeping: The Ming 29.01 ‘Midnight’ Worldtimer

Ming expands its 29-series with the new 29.01 ‘Midnight’, a refined and stealthy interpretation of the brand’s distinctive worldtimer. Retaining the foundational architecture of the original 29.01, the ‘Midnight’ variant introduces a bold aesthetic shift through a black DLC-coated grade 5 titanium case, offering a deeper, darker expression of the model’s modernist DNA.

A Familiar Form in a New Tone

The case measures 40 mm in diameter and 11.80 mm in height, featuring Ming’s signature “flying blade” lugs and a smooth, rounded profile. The DLC application is strategically executed: polished surfaces on the top and bottom of the lugs contrast with matte-finished case flanks, producing a play of light that subtly separates the components without visible seams. A box-style sapphire crystal spans the full dial surface, maintaining the brand’s preference for a clean, bezel-free presentation.

Layered Sapphire and Luminous Functionality

At the heart of the watch lies a sophisticated two-part dial assembly. The base dial, crafted from metal and given a lightly textured grain finish, displays the 24-hour scale and rotates continuously to provide world time functionality. Above it floats a static sapphire dial, printed with the names of 24 world cities. The rotation mechanism is driven by an edge-mounted bearing mechanism for smooth rotation, ensuring fluid, reliable movement of the base disc.

Both the hour and minute hands, as well as the printed indices and numerals on the sapphire layer, are crafted from sapphire and filled with HyCeram infused with Super-LumiNova X1. The 24-hour numerals themselves glow in orange Super-LumiNova, optimizing legibility while reinforcing the dial’s visual complexity.

In-House Movement and Rose Gold Accents

Visible through a domed sapphire exhibition caseback is the caliber ASE 222, developed exclusively for Ming by Schwarz-Etienne. This micro-rotor movement features architectural bridges and plates coated in 5N rose gold. The movement includes elements such as a skeletonized mainspring barrel, a curved tungsten micro-rotor, and hand-finished anglage, balancing technical functionality with visual artistry.

Integrated Strap and Availability

The 29.01 ‘Midnight’ is paired with a FKM rubber strap secured by a DLC-coated pin buckle, ensuring durability and cohesion with the overall design. The new watch is priced at CHF 22,000.
