As part of its ongoing effort to revisit functional tool watches from its archive, Timex introduces the 1995 Intrepid Reissue—a purpose-built timepiece that draws from a niche sailing reference of the mid-1990s. Originally conceived for marine activity and outdoor sport, this reissue remains technically faithful to its roots, offering robust construction, legibility, and navigational functionality.

Historical Context: A Watch Worn by JFK Jr.

While technically built for sailors and outdoor enthusiasts, the original 1990s Intrepid gained modest notoriety for its association with John F. Kennedy Jr., who regularly wore the model during his sailing excursions. A known sailing enthusiast, JFK Jr. embodied the lifestyle Timex intended this model to serve, lending the watch an authentic and historic endorsement that remains relevant in this reissue.

Case Design and Construction

The stainless steel case measures 41mm in diameter with a thickness of 11mm, giving the watch a modern wrist presence while remaining relatively slim for a sports model. The case features a brushed finish to minimize glare and surface fingerprints, a practical choice for use in bright outdoor conditions.

A recessed crown at 4 o’clock reduces interference with wrist movement, while the green pusher located at 9 o’clock activates Timex’s signature Indiglo illumination system, which evenly lights the dial for visibility in low-light conditions.

The case is fitted with a solid caseback, mineral glass crystal, and offers 100 meters of water resistance, suitable for surface water sports and recreational use.

Bezel and Navigational Functionality

True to its sailing-tool origins, the watch is equipped with a unidirectional bezel featuring a black slide rule insert. The bezel is enhanced with six raised claws that provide superior grip, even when handling the watch with gloves or wet hands.

It includes multiple navigational scales, designed to assist with nautical distance conversions and other practical on-water calculations. A luminous pip at the 12 o’clock position aids in orientation, especially during night-time or low-visibility operations.

Dial Layout and Legibility

The white dial has a multi-layered construction designed for maximum clarity. It begins with a central disc displaying black Arabic numerals and openworked hands, followed by a wide outer disc featuring blackened baton-style hour markers. The marker at 12 o’clock is replaced by an inverted train track-style indicator for easy directional reference.

Completing the dial is a domed black minute and seconds track, accented with green highlights, which visually balances the dial and adds color contrast that aids in quick reading. The entire display lights up under Indiglo activation, ensuring full dial visibility in darkness.

Movement and Everyday Performance

Inside, the watch is powered by a reliable quartz movement, chosen for its robustness, precision, and suitability for sport watches. The quartz caliber supports the Indiglo system and provides low-maintenance, consistent operation over extended use.
